Hey all
My name is mike, I’ve been a member of 914world (914club) since march 2005 when my son Kenny (a.k.a. orange914) bought his first 914. at present he owns an early 1973 that is a keeper. This is why I’m researching this particular 914

From what I’ve learned the first 1000 1973 914’s were slated for the European market but sent to the U.S. due to early 73 demand. They have some unique features that I’m attempting to research. i want to thank many of you who have inputted so far. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

If you have ANY info. On this car or have noticed any oddities drop a line. Please e-mail me

Thanks, mike (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

Thanks to all those who have responded and participated in my fact gathering on the first 1000 1973 Porsche 914’s. There are 43 registered owners on the 914world.com at present. Generally these cars are known as “first 1000”. I’ve been informed by auto Atlanta that they have found there are a few more than 1000 sent over. It does stop however by at least v.i.n. #4732901100. These cars where originally built and equipped for the European market. Because of high demand in the U.S. in 1973, the first 1000+ V.I.N.# 914’s where slated for Germany but sent to California dealers. From my findings I’m impressed with this nitch 914 because it is in my opinion a very balanced 914. By that I mean it’s got the benefits of a factory improvements and upgrades that come with a few years of production. It’s especially desirable for auto crossing due to factory upgrades and is lighter than U.S. 73 and up models, and is without the heavy smog equipment that comes with later models.

The below information is a collection of owners, history and facts about this car (4732900000 thru 4732901100?). There are 43 members in the 914 roster that have v.i.n. #’s that fall in this category and have been contacted. This info has been submitted by club members from first hand knowledge of their own early 1973 914’s:

Here are some of the unique facts I’ve learned, any additional info would be great!:

1 vinyl on a-pillars (around windshield)
2 front hubs non-hub centric (72 earlier style)
3 turn signal switch/wiring harness (72 earlier style)
4 doors lightweight/non reinforced, early (72 earlier) window regulators
5 1.7 liter fuel injected engine
6 Side shift transmission
7 15x5.5 dealer installed “Dan gurney” wheels, sometimes called western spoke rims, some may have had pedrinis
8 1970-1972 headlight switch and wiring
9 1970-1972 light rain tray
10 Sold out of California dealerships
11 front bumpers had 73 “tits” and holes for European license plate

He sold the car to me in 1980. I am one lucky guy, even if I did pay full book for the car.

Here's a late addition. 4732900984 living in Vancouver, BC. Has 2.0 engine, appearance group, sway bars, light doors with (better) late regulators, and non-hubcentric rotors. Are we early '73 guys part of an elite group that has secret meetings and speak in coded language?

Well it seems that I have at least one of the 1000's : Nemo- 73 0164, 1.7 , tailshift linkage, side shift trans, reenforced doors . First 914 I bought , still have , rust around floor pans , battery tray / hell hole not too bad . Probably use for parts. will look over for more #'s . Ghost - 73 1042 , presently a VERY good roller I plan on getting together to drive , newwer paint , Ivory White , forgot the code , factory front and rear swaybars !!! , interior is gutted , probably had console as the heater lever is offset for console . All numbers match , windshield post , rt frt fender , drv dr tag, head light area , had 2.0 Fuchs. Also have two 72 , one came from out of Calif. for sure , still has Lic pte on frt, guy I got it from moved here from there, it's got fbrgls rear flares, slope nose , and strangely enough RUST around all the floor edges and tunnel .No hell or console rust , just the bottom bad , no engine or trans . Frt hubs drilled for 5 lug ,7x15 fake Fuchs, spare 7x15 for trunk , adapters on rear 8x15 fake Fuchs . Will check on all the numbers when time permits.

I wish I had an earlier 73 for the non-hub centric front rotors, given that I picked up a set of early Pedrinis that I had intended to use. Mine's later, 4732913367, but I still have white headlight surrounds and aluminum door sill plates.

VIN 4732901954 - 2.0 GA000424
Tom T
Orange CA

QUESTION - When did MY 1973 start for VIN ....00001?? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif)

BTW all - "VIN #...." is repetitively redundant, since the N in VIN stands for "number"

OK - now to screw up how we're figuring out the first 1000 or so produced .... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Apparently we cannot go by the VIN alone for when a 914 was built to see if it was among the first 1000 in the 1973 MY, because from what I've learned this week -
Karmann built & painted the shells with the VIN stamped on the Chassis, then sent them to the VW Osnabruck Final Assembly Plant,

... then once there, the painted shells were pulled for final assembly NOT by VIN order - but rather according to what paint colors the orders were from customers & the Distributors, and the ones destined for the good ole USA had the VIN labels with build dates affixed to the driver-side door jambs.

Therefore, an earlier VIN could've been built after a later one, such as:

4732901102 - Built 9/72 (later than the 2 below, but it has A-pillar Vinyl)

4732901650 - Built 8/72

4732901954 - Built 8/72 (my 914-2.0 below) ...

You can read more on this topic here:
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=103085
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=103136

.

So I'd suggest that folks ADD their Build Dates to their VINs here.

.

My early-73 914S / 914-2.0 - VIN 4732901954 - Built 8/72 - matching GA000424:
> Originally L80E Light Ivory & the #31 Beige (501/502) Leatherette/Basketweave with Dark Tan (503) Loop Pile Carpet, Full Appearance & Performance Group sets of options.
> This is the 3rd Repaint Color - Antracite Dark Grey Metallic (5/80 by me), & prior repaints were Copper Metallic (8/76 by me), & Bonze or Gold Metallic (by PO/OO or dealer prior to my purchse in 12/75).
> BTW - I will be restoring it to L80E & it's original factory fitment, including retrofitting back-in the: fog lights/grills/switch, center console/gauges & a set of 5 Fuchs 2L Alloy Wheels - which were "mysteriously missing" when I bought it in 1975.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/type.gif) ... Time to update your info here folks!
