Hello everyone! OK, I've got an empty 914 in my driveway and a 4.0 liter Rover engine in my garage. A Buick 4bbl intake is en route as is an Edelbrock carb. I've got lots of questions about clearance, most notably about the distributor. The Rover engine came stock with a "crankshaft angle sensor" and individual coils. It'd be great to use this instead of the distributor but I don't know if I can run this ignition system without the "computer" that also controls the fuel injection. If I need to go with the distributor instead that's fine but then how do I overcome clearance restrictions? I would REALLY love to talk to someone with this conversion completed!!!

Didn't your original photos, in this thread, show the Rover tubular headers that Tom is talking about? I have some Buick 215 cast iron ones if I can find them in this mess I call a Garage. Dave |

Tom, Dave... I went to my local Pick-a-Part in the beautiful SoCal city of Ontario and SCORED!!! Picked up a Rover alternator ($30) a coil pack ($39) a thermostat housing (just in case) a radiator ($50) and dual fan shroud assembly ($50). While I was there I noticed that on the engines I pulled these parts from (3.9, 4.0 and 4.2 liter Discoverys) the timing chain covers stick out WAY further than mine. I didn't have a tape measure with me but when I got home I measured mine. It only sticks out 1-3/4 inch from the block (measured from the right-hand side) Also, my serpentine crank pulley sticks out 5-1/4 inch from the block (again right-hand side). I think perhaps the combination of switching to distributor-less ignition plus maybe the thinner timing-chain cover could save you TONS of room! Does your crank pulley stick out past 5-1/4 inches? (see pics below)
Also, I have the exhaust manifolds that came with the engine. They are shaped nicely and fit close to the block but 1. have this weird accordion-like connector between the front two cylinders and the rear two, and 2. are very thin-walled. With the installed engine only inches from the driver I'm very concerned about noise. Perhaps thicker, cast-iron exhaust manifolds will be quieter. Any thoughts?
