Look for original paint on both 914s under the carpets, up under the dash, inner thresholds/longitudinals, behind the gas tank & interior & exterior firewall pads, the drip pan on the engine lid, uo in the slots where the targa top rear latches are on the roll-bar, etc. for hints of the original colors where a repaint might not have reached (unless they did a full strip down & repaint), to verify the original color - esp. on the 76. These areas are also likely to be largely unfaded (door jambs are too easy to repaint, so not as reliable).

I agree that it doesn't look like a Sepia Brown, and it looks like a metallic paint.

Also, there is an outside chance that a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) may actually list the original "98" color chosen by the OO/1st buyer, depending on how complete the Kardex factory records were (and whether the PCNA-COA staff reads the codes right (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) ). This will also tell you if the engine and transaxle case nos. still match the original (photo them first to verify & send).

Porches Club of America (PCA) also gets $20 or so off the $100+ COA cost, as well as several 20% off orders from Porsche a year & a monthly national & local magazine - so well worth $42/yr. for you & wife IMHO - aside from their various events. I wasn't a member until I started a resto of my 73 914-2.0 in 09, but it's been well worth it to me, and many on here have been long time members - even back when the PCA's 356/911/912/etc. snobs turned their noses up at 914s. Nowadays most think they're cool. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

They also might help you on your work on the 914s - so go to their respective home pages & peruse their other sections (esp. Bowlsby's, rennlist & p914), as well as for finding the actual color once you find an unfaded & unchanged paint area as noted above.
