[size=3]Here are a few pics that I said I would share for thoughts & input on doing restoration to our 2 Porsche's 1970 Yello & 1976 Brown. Thanks for the support & help. We will start by sending to our mechanic the first week of March 2011...wifes first, hers is the 76'. Will update with pics and things done/completed along the way. Thanks,

Thanks and we have decided to leave them or in this case repaint them the original colors...will do the interior back to original as much as possible as well. One of our good friends owns an autobody shop & he is the one that gave us the idea. By the way what is a "Side Shift" for the 5 speed tranny? Thanks much (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) |

QUOTE By the way what is a "Side Shift" for the 5 speed tranny? Thanks much (IMG:style_emoticons/default/bye1.gif) The side shift tranny came in '73.....'70-72 had the "tail shift".....refers to the shift rod location on the tranny.... FYI, the tailshifters can be converted to a side shift with the proper hardware, cuz the case is the same. That said, if your 70 is original & matching nos. that you want to keep as OE, then I'd recco you not convert it, but just do new bushings, etc. (if needed) to tighten up the action a bit, but you'll still be (IMG:style_emoticons/default/stirthepot.gif) for gears in an early tailshifter. It's literally where the shift bar goes into the transaxle - in the far back, or on the pass. side. Also FYI, the 914's transaxle was converted from the rear engined 911/912 with the "914 tail" pointing forward, which was the shortest distance to the tranny on a taildragger, but they initially never bothered to change it when flipped 180 degrees in the middie 914s, and just made a long-assed/multi-bend shifter rod to reach it. After many complaints about the sloppy shifting on the early 914/4s & 914-6's, VW-Porsche finally decided to do what they could've and should've done in the first place, and put the shifter on the R-side, which is the closest point to the cockpit on a mid-engined car with a motor in front of the rear-drive transaxle (the transmission is actually in front of the "differential" in this combo. case). |
