The base 72 kit was needlefelt perlon (like felt) through dec of 71 the pass floor piece was longer along with the bulkhead and center tunnel piece different than jan 72 up production. (corresponded with the retractable seat belts.
The appearance group 72 models has installed loop carpet the so called "hair" type. 1972 916 had installed hardigan cut wool. All of these kits were dark charcoal not the light charcoal like most aftermarket kits one sees in the cars. (that is for all of the black interiors!!!!!!!) In 74 1/2 the carpet was changed to a nylon tweed mix of black and purple that continued until the end of the line in 12/75.
What is available in addition to the cheap domestic loop kits out there is the factory carpet kits (rare and expensive but available in both the felt and the loop, and the tweed) and good replicas of the felt and the loop and the tweed. One needs to look for good binding a good drivers heal pad, good workmanship (as all of the aftermarket kits are not molded, it takes a bit of sewing to form the carpet) and always make sure that the hole is there for the steering column to go through.
It will take an amateur about two hours to install a kit and all that is needed is some spray trim adhesive used sparingly on the rocker carpets, the bulkhead carpet and the left drivers wheelwell carpet. The pedal board carpet will hold itself up by being clamped by the pedal board. One must drop the steering column and lower dash pad to install the column through the hole in the pass bulkhead carpet.
The 70-71 carpet kits consisted of 9 pieces the 72-76 carpet kits 10 pieces.
