Hey all My name is mike, I’ve been a member of 914world (914club) since march 2005 when my son Kenny (a.k.a. orange914) bought his first 914. at present he owns an early 1973 that is a keeper. This is why I’m researching this particular 914 From what I’ve learned the first 1000 1973 914’s were slated for the European market but sent to the U.S. due to early 73 demand. They have some unique features that I’m attempting to research. i want to thank many of you who have inputted so far. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) If you have ANY info. On this car or have noticed any oddities drop a line. Please e-mail me Thanks, mike (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif) 209-537-3749 My e-mail address is: A914r@yahoo.com Thanks to all those who have responded and participated in my fact gathering on the first 1000 1973 Porsche 914’s. There are 43 registered owners on the 914world.com at present. Generally these cars are known as “first 1000”. I’ve been informed by auto Atlanta that they have found there are a few more than 1000 sent over. It does stop however by at least v.i.n. #4732901100. These cars where originally built and equipped for the European market. Because of high demand in the U.S. in 1973, the first 1000+ V.I.N.# 914’s where slated for Germany but sent to California dealers. From my findings I’m impressed with this nitch 914 because it is in my opinion a very balanced 914. By that I mean it’s got the benefits of a factory improvements and upgrades that come with a few years of production. It’s especially desirable for auto crossing due to factory upgrades and is lighter than U.S. 73 and up models, and is without the heavy smog equipment that comes with later models. The below information is a collection of owners, history and facts about this car (4732900000 thru 4732901100?). There are 43 members in the 914 roster that have v.i.n. #’s that fall in this category and have been contacted. This info has been submitted by club members from first hand knowledge of their own early 1973 914’s: Here are some of the unique facts I’ve learned, any additional info would be great!: 1 vinyl on a-pillars (around windshield) 2 front hubs non-hub centric (72 earlier style) 3 turn signal switch/wiring harness (72 earlier style) 4 doors lightweight/non reinforced, early (72 earlier) window regulators 5 1.7 liter fuel injected engine 6 Side shift transmission 7 15x5.5 dealer installed “Dan gurney” wheels, sometimes called western spoke rims, some may have had pedrinis 8 1970-1972 headlight switch and wiring 9 1970-1972 light rain tray 10 Sold out of California dealerships 11 front bumpers had 73 “tits” and holes for European license plate Past and present owners and their stories: v.i.n. #4732900001 Aaron Cox (Aaron Cox) v.i.n. #4732900005 (cptkraut) v.i.n. #4732900025 (dee) v.i.n. #4732900045 "Stephen Snares" (defianty) stv1701@blueyonder.co.uk Owned since 9/06 manufacture date 8/72 Brought into U.K. 1999 from California, 2.0 engine, (L80E) light ivory v.i.n. #4732900050 (Jeff) v.i.n. #4732900067 (mudfoot) Zionsville, Indiana v.i.n. #4732900135 (storotex914) v.i.n. #4732900150 (Neil J) v.i.n. #4732900157 Kenny miller (orange914) a914r@yahoo.com 209-537-3749 Owned since 8/05 Always California car, 1.7 fuel injection, (L20E) signal orange, original blue plate California car. Ahhh, the 70's Mike - land of the vinyl "Landau" tops on anything that rolled! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
I even had one on the big ole 69 Pontiac Ventura 4dr I bought from my Dad during college in 71 when my 68 Opel Kadette's 1.1L engine blew! Still trying to find evidence if my early73 2L VIN...1954 had the A-pillar vinyl or not, & will report back later. Is your Orange 914-2.0 listed at Hemmings yet? If so - then post a link here so interested parties can (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) & maybe plan to bid! |

Mike Hey Mike, seriously - I was hoping you'd keep on the early 73 info topic as a way to keep active on the baord here, and was hoping to convince Pat Garvey & "the powers that be" on here to have it as a nailed topic in the O&H forum. That is, if you're game to have a semi-official role here! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Your input really helped out too. I'm really glad the car went to a great owner. Never know when another 914 may show up here, so no plans to cut and run. Loved the 6 years our family was involved with them. Not sure if you've seen my newest venture. http://5starmediaworkscom/ Mike |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) I did finally find your ad in the June Hemmings. So keep up the good work - both on your new venture & on the early 73 914's here! As to a future 914 in your stable ..... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) ..... it would make an interesting build thread for an adapted 914 which you could drive, maybe off of a Sporto transplant into a solid 73-74 2.0 project car or solid driver who's starting cost &/or provenance/condition/CW-ness wouldn't make it prohibitively expensive to do the conversion to non-original trim (for example, your Orange was waaay too nice to bastardize that way) ...... maybe adding acc & brake hand controls on the wheel & an auto-clutch Sportomatic (still shift but no clutching). IIRC there was a member who got a Sporto & its Pedal Cluster from a 911 or 912, and added the Sporto to his stick 914 to make it easier for him to drive it (knee problems or something IIRC). Go look .... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/type.gif) Just a thought! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/popcorn[1].gif) |
