Soo.. I've posted a few times on here, got my turn signals working fine while I was off with a bugger'd shoulder... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) Now my shoulder is good so its time to dig into this thing... I've now realized that the tar coating the underside of the car was doing a good job of covering up some real big problems.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) I have holes in both right and left rear longs, both rockers, front trunk, floors, firewall.. Transmission I'll have to rebuild, but other than leaky pushrod tube and oil cooler seals... the motor runs strong.. I'll post up some pictures, I'm sure you'll all want to see.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)
Here is a pic after I drove it home... rear wheels arent folding in and only the right door had a tight gap at the top... didnt look tooo bad when I looked at it.. figured some rocker work and I'd have er' back running in the summer... Attached image(s) |

I also got an engine stand/yoke in and popped the engine onto it so I could begin tearing it down. got the sheet metal, FI off and then the valve train, heads, cylinders.
The heads look better than I thought they would... no big visible cracking around the spark plug, and it looks like all the seats are in decent shape for 40 years old.. the exhaust studs are pulled on one of the heads and were tack welded to the heat exchangers which was fun convincing them to let go, but it doesn't look like significant damage. What I was most surprised with was the condition of the lifters.. A couple of them had a very slight dish in the centre that you could only really see if you tilted it away from the light and got a shadow on it, but most of them looked absolutely spotless. I was expecting to see some FOD damage or scratches or heavier wear or SOMETHING.. I also popped off the oil pump to have a look since theres been a few threads lately about failing oil pumps... Mine looks like its in good shape.. I'll be replacing it anyways, but its nice to know it wasn't about to go boom. Now I just have to find myself a proper pair of snap-ring pliers and I'll get the pistons off and work on splitting the case. We are working lots of overtime right now at work so I should hopefully be able to save up money to get engine parts and heads rebuilt while I get working on more welding.. Attached thumbnail(s) |
