I voted for "Speedster Mike" because of its' overall cleanliness and condition. The engine bay is pristine and the interior is very well kept. Its' overall execution is very good. Yes, the six, is a six, for what it is...well, it's good, but it is neglected by any other standards, (sixes owned by other people on this site). It has a terrible front bumper top. The dash material is embedded with dirt from one side to the other. The carpet is old. The cross-over air cleaner is missing stickers. and the center stowage piece is damaged...etc, etc... Another five or six grand, it could be better. Dave, I really don't think critisizing the guy's car is called for ( I really don't like it in the Classified either). It's bad enough when "Real" Politicians do it with Negative Ads, but here, we should be supportive of each other & our cars. T.C. |

I agree ...TC; however my words were not harsh, just pointed out why I didn't choose the 914/6. If someone wants to leverage their chances with a six, then they should show more effort and clean the car first. (...boy, I'm glad I held back the bad comments about the others !) Maybe, the Car of the Month has moved from displaying the best effort...to "who knows who" or "friends of friends." It was an effort to level the playing field. Photos of each entry were submitted for comparison and judgement... If we ARE to be supportive of each other and our cars, then let's look at the details...and reward their hard work. Offering a beautifully kept 1.7 should be on equal terms as a 914/6. Once, I had a chance to look closely at a 916 and was sadly disappointed in the fit and execution. The only thing that I enjoyed was the 190 HP 2.4S motor. The rest of the car seemed trite, and less than it should have been. The real 916 is only a '72 /4 frame with a 2.4S motor. I didn't know that "WE" were so...thin skinned. If anyone here should be on the "Car of the Month" it should be the English guy that totally replaced the bottom six inches of his car from scratch. Talk about effort, and dedication. p.s. What Classifieds ? I didn't see that... |

Talk about effort, and dedication. p.s. What Classifieds ? I didn't see that... Dave, I agree with your points...to an extent. But it needs to be kept in overall perspective of a truly original survivor vs. a full restoration, which is why PCA & others have separate classes for these and are judged accordingly and separately until Best of Show level. Our COTM seems to lean more to the modified & restored 914s, than the originals - so it doesn't hurt to recognize a survivor in excellent condition now and again - whether /4 or -6! BTW - I am a 73 914-2.0 long time owner & actually love the 73-74 2L /4s, and I LOVE Marathon Blue, so I LOVE the competition here! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) IMHO it takes as much dedication to upkeep over a long term - 42 years in this case, to keep an all original car in great shape, as to completely gut & replace/resto a car - any car - 914 or other. In this case as the person originally nominating the 914-6, I thought it was an equal effort to the resto's typically nominated, due to the near pristine condition of the original Orange paint & upholstery - in spite of the need for a good cleaning & detailing, plus replacement and updating of certain missing & deteriorating parts. However - as I pointed out in my prior post, this new guy has only acquired the car in Oct. `11 IIRC, and he's only had a chance to start catching up on those items needing attention from a 914 which has managed to survive 42 years in snowy/salted roads NH, and then sat in the garage relatively untouched/unused for a period of the more recent time building up dust, grime & a chance for the tin-worms to work on his bumper pads. In any case, it's a remarkably well preserved example of a first MY 914 - whether it is a /4 or a -6, and should be judged/voted by everybody here based on that fact. I'll point out that a few months back in 2011, Gustl's green original 70 914-6 was also voted COTM for it's survivor quality, even with a few warts which needed attended to, as have some other COTMs of both restored & modified flavors, as well as a few other survivor 914s. You made your choice/vote & stated why, and I've stated why I felt the orange 914-6 was worthy of nomination as a survivor despite it's warts - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ...so now the voting continues.....
