Hey guys, well here it is. My 71 1.7! I'm anxious to get started. First thing I want to do is sand the body down and start the primer process. First Question, what grit sandpaper should I use to begin with to start to get some surface rust off as well as the old paint? I want to get it down to metal and go from there, inside and out. The car also came with 2 trans and I want to know how I know which one came with the car? Sorry for all of the stupid questions, but I'm a nube! Also gonna post a link to more pictures in a post to follow this. I will also add the VIN number to the database on here...

Looks like you're doing a great job with your re-build. I came in looking to see if anybody had a recommendation on where to get 1.7L Heads (mine are finally shot), but I see that you are going way beyond what I am able to do.
I've owned my '72 1.7L since 1982 and it is my constant project (very fun project). One thing that I did about 20 years ago with my first engine rebuild was that I hard all the engine sheet metal bead blasted, zinc plated, and powder coated. The zinc plating keeps the rust away. I chose white powder coating and it really lightens up the engine compartment when everything is back in the car. Here are a couple of pictures. Attached thumbnail(s) |
