012 is a partial Audi part number. It is the transmission used in FWD Audi's & VW that have a longitudinal engine. It is also the same case as the Boxster 5 speed. The 01E is a European transmission found in TDI's, A8 and some others. The 01E is very rare in the US as a FWD tranny. Both of these trannies are available in Quattro. You want to find a FWD version.
The link I posted above looks like the front half of a 012 and the rear half of a 01E. The 01E in Europe is matted to a V8 in the A8. It is perfect for an LS conversion. The problem is most 01E's are Quattro trannies. Since they are rare most shops import from Europe. Identifying the tranny is also a challenge unless you know what you are looking at. Most ebay sellers identify by the vehicle typa and not by the transmission type. If you try to buy one here (US) odds are it will be imported and you will pay over $5k for it. Andys runs a 01E on his V8 conversion, so he can speak to how much and how hard it is to get one. Since the introduction of the 01E there has been many more choices to pop up. The Cayman S, 6 speed I have is built by Getrag but has the same bell housing pattern as the 012. My Getrag is called a 466, not a 012. Again just a partial part number. The Getrag 466 was also available in Audi's as both a FWD and quattro. The TDI 5 speed, code DUK (also 012 based)is very common in the UK and has great ratios for a V8. Since it normally connects to a diesel engine, it can handle torque. The Audi/VW 02M is the GTI tranny which will not work for us. Confused yet? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) |
