In CA, if the insurance buys you out of the car, i.e., pays you the agreed value, even if you negotiate to keep the car, it becomes a salvage title car. For example, if your car is stolen and carefully stripped, and you file a claim which exceeds the value of the car (in the opinion of the ins co), they pay you and it becomes salvage, damaged or not. If they pay to fix it, then it MAY remain clear of the salvage title cloud, but they have the option of listing the car as wrecked and rebuilt. Even if the negotiated value on that black car is $75K, IMO the cost of repair is likely to be far higher, leaving the owner holding the bag. The Cap'n
