Has anyone tried roller lifters in a type 4, or any flat motor?

So you get it, we each do things differently.
Some insist on water, others do both. It's no big deal to test and talk about the possible ideas. I was told once that Djet could not do anything more than 2.0 liters. I figured out that statement was wrong, and it was a great learning experience in the process. I would love to do the overhead cam heads, I recall they were based upon Subaru heads, then they decided to do new castings, then I lost track of the progress because there was no progress for a few years...
