I have a customer who is building a 914 trike using the back half of a 914 with 914 trans and suspension with a V8 Chevy engine. I think he is going to need a cable shift but I wonder if it would make much difference if he uses a tail shift or side shift trans. I don't know how either trans could be setup with stock type shift rods. I just wonder of a tail shift would work as well for hm ?

Tail shift would be easier to make a cable shift. There was a subaru conversion a long time ago that did it and im sure the info is somewhere.
