I just had another idea... tell me if this is crazy or practical. Could I mount the vent/heater controls vertically in a stock (repro) center console? Then I could postpone the rest of the interior restoration until my kids are older and I've got more time. I'm guessing that the cables would have to be longer. The controls weren't sliding that well even before this, so not sure if they have to be at a certain length or angle.
