My buddy with a '53 VW splitty likes to play with different low buck engine combos, he has a 40hp T1 VW engine in it right now and just bought a supercharger for $300 (canadian) with free shipping from china.
A Judson supercharger kit is about $2K. He needs to find a side draft carb and is wondering if he should mix some oil in the gas? A judson has a bottle that you fill with marvel mystery oil for oiling the SC. BTW he does have the original numbers 25hp engine, 0 to 100kph in a couple hours...downhill. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) He's copying this guys engine intake, but he'll have to make some changes to fit into a bug. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-DrLlRJ8QEE |

The SC from my mini cooper is small and could be used. It has no oil circ, there is 4.9oz in the nose and about 1 oz in the tail. Rebuilt it last night, that's how I know. I have a spare from the core engine I built.

On ebay is a kit to do a light rebuild that includes nose seal, inner and outer nose bearings, and two bottles of SC oil. Im at work or Id post a pic (no cell service for pics). The rest of the over haul would require a machine shop and my inspection showed no need for deeper teardown. I cant remember what the kit cost. |

The Toyota unit has oil @ each end to lube the bearing ,Toyota call them a sealed unit but the oil can be changed,no rebuild kits for them however. Most of these units make rather low boost,if overdriven they become what is known as a "hairdryer",even with interstage cooling they don't perform well if you exceed their design range/pumping ability. The Eaton units used on many cars GM's,Merc's and others provide good performance if matched to the size of the engine and installed correctly, very cheap to buy used or even new. I seem to remember they make around 4 differant capacity units the smallest being the BMW mini one up to what they fitted on the Mustangs. Doc is correct about the Eaton blower, rebuild kits are relatively cheap as is the factory oil,but be aware of rotor and housing wear that cant be repaired. |
