Putting together the handbrake on a 914 that came as a lot of "pieces". I have the hinged brake handle and the curved ratchet piece but something is missing. I think there's supposed to be a thick wire "spring" that holds tension between the handle and the ratchet? Any idea where to find one or is it possible to make one?

Sounds like you have a early break-away handle. I would suggest that you get the one-piece handle from a later model car. It will work better in the long run.
