Hi All. As we dig deeper into our 914, we are finding a random assortment of nuts and bolts that I expect were incorporated into the car over the years. While I am not trying to source original hardware, I’d like to swap the odd ones out to be at more consistent (and, of course replacing any trashed/ rounded over/ damaged ones). Buying one or two at a time is going to get expensive and I cannot find a good reference for the right grade to use anyway (5.8, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9).
Is there a short list of the most common hardware found on our cars that I could use to start a collection of new ones? Thank You! |

I bought a kit many years ago with lots of DIN-spec nuts, bolts, and washers. (Note that generic "metric" may be JIS, which uses different wrench sizes for many of the fasteners than DIN does!!) Came in a blue metal case with compartments for the different fasteners. I would stop over to the local metric supply place (who hasn't done in-store sales in a very long time now) to get lots of extras of items I ran low on.
The most common fasteners in our cars are M6 and M8. Those are the 10mm and 13mm wrench ones. (JIS uses 12mm for M8 fasteners!) Almost everything seems to have a wavy washer on it as well. And there are a bunch of different lengths of each used. I wound up getting boxes of 100 each of a bunch of them. Still have a good bit of them but can't find them now. Three moves will do that to a fella. --DD |
