IMHO, 101 will be a lot faster, and shorter route. Plus I think there are more towns you pass thru in case you need parts or something. Brian's parents live just outside of camarillo in Newbury Park. We've always taken 101 as opposed to I5. I think the 5 would be better for going into LA itself, but if you're along the coast, 101 is the best bet.
