I have started working on a car a purchased last year. Its low mileage and is cleaning up very nicely. I thought I would take some pictures as I work thru this project.

I did not need another car but a 73 came up for sale last year and when I went and looked at it and it was rust free so purchased it on the spot. When went to picked it up and drive home the next day I got the full story. Two owner car, documented 83K miles (Porsche dealer stamps in maintenance book) it had only been driven about 1K miles in the last 20 years. It has a issue where it will not stay in 4th gear and that apparently limited driving. Because of many oil leaks and the engine is very well marinated with oil and will need a full reseal. Fuel injection works great and the car is very original. Its too nice to cut up and do a -6 conversion so I will fix the tranny and reseal the engine drive it a little and probably sell it to fund other projects.

When I pulled the rockers off all the screws, washers and spacers looked like they were factory and had not been touched.

Awesome car! Nice to see this thread. I'm so glad the tires got switched — the tiny profile ones were so wrong for me. Also the tint I'm glad was removed.

Interesting the targa trim turned black at some point, and the chrome bumpers stayed on. I think black bumpers were better with the no-sail-vinyl look, and chrome targa trim to match the windshield trim but still a nice car as-is.

@nathanxnathan I am not sure I follow, the bumpers were painted white at some point and the previous owner swapped out for the chrome. I did not think there were black bumper available in early 73' but I am a noob so don't kill me (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

you are saying the bumpers and trim are not correct?

you are saying the bumpers and trim are not correct?

targa bar trim in 73 is correct in black when it didn't have vinyl.
standard non appearance group had black bumpers in 73 same as 74s did later.
but you could order it optioned with chrome bumpers.
original owner probably did, who knows. car seems to very original and unmolested.

only the earlier cars than 73 had the raw minimalism look with body painted bumpers and horn grilles. its your call but i wouldn't mess too much with the car you have. its a real period piece thats survived all the way to here and very cool. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

changing the wheels back to silver was a good call however. looks right now.

i see back at start of thread he says they were repainted in some bad black paint, not original paint. looks like he removed them and replaced with chrome.

ah nice, I didn't know that 73's had gone to black bumpers, the standard equipment cars.

I always thought that when they went to black bumpers that the targa trim was just chrome across the model range? It does look in the pics like it had chrome targa trim at the beginning of the thread anyway.

I saw in the comments of the bring a trailer page that targa72 said he'd offer the original black bumpers as an option to the buyer.
