dropping in information gathered over jan 2023 with a set of posts.
subject matter regarding original windscreens (manufacturers and markings) along with original side glass prompted by this thread and question by member tom @TJB/914 . a really good question. link to original thread http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?showtopic=363175 thread ended with summation by @davep - resident expert historian. purpose of this thread is to condense the data found and edit out all the meanderings and discussion in original thread which is a bit much to punch through. this will present the data found in a summarised form to assist anyone if they are interested or require this info for restoration purposes, or if just curious. many thanks to @JeffBowlsby for his collection of option codes for 914s which goes someway to trying to sort this out - if its sorted out? ---> essential data. and for asking the right questions along the way. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) last of all but not least of all @Vitamin914 for being an expert in windscreen manufacture. the real deal. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) comments and corrections very welcome. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif) |

PRE 1974
example 1 1972 914/4 with "tinted glass" option. fitted with SIGLA windscreen. appears identical to 1974 914s with tinted option and sigla screens. Note - as minor detail. Sigla "tinted" screens do not appear to have french approval line in text. yet the clear screens do. two examples of clear Sigla screens for 1974 have the french approval line included. ?? example 2. 914/6 with kinonglas windscreen. "tinted" example 3 1972 914/4 with kinonglas windscreen "tinted" example 4 1973 914 2.0 with kinonglas windscreen "tinted" example 5 1973 914 1.7 with kinonglas windscreen clear. Note - the kinonglas windscreens appear to evolve. pre 1974 they are noted as plate glass rather than float glass. this is essentially a technical term which describes a different process to produce the flat sheet glass the laminated windscreens are built up from. further examples and data is required. but essentially its the same kind of windscreen as the 1974 kinonglas. different DOT M-Code certificate numbers and German D-Code numbers are listed. these are earlier versions of the 1974 screens. the SIGLA screens appear to be unchanged and on offer or supplied pre 1974. ADDITIONAL 1970 914/6. thought to be original. kinonglas clear screen. 1971 914/6. kinonglas clear screen. 1971 914 1.7. kinonglas clear screen. |
