Now that the structural changes are done on my GT interior, I'm moving on to wire in the turn signal, ignition and wiper switches. It makes my brain ache to study the wiring diagrams from my '71 914 (early 12 pin harness), and the 1971 911 and 914-6 diagrams. Differences between them all and I'm a less than proficient electrician.
Here's a chart I made for the turn signal and ignition connections (thanks to Jeff Bowlsby, Clay Perrine and Tom Butler for groundwork posts and advice): https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Hvk...dit?usp=sharing My biggest remaining questions go to a couple wires from the 911 turn signal harness that run outside the 914 12 pin connector. I've labeled them in the chart above as position 15 and 16 (on the right). 15 is a red/white wire which runs from the switch bundled with the parking light wires, and from the 911 diagram it appears to be always on power connecting to the light switch. And 16 is a black wire coming back from the 6 prong plug. Can anyone confirm how they are used? I'd be very appreciative of anyone who has put a 911 column in an early car helping me out. Am I on the right track or just smoking it? Thank you, John |

by buying a new bulkhead plug, soldering the pins and then installing it. We do it here all of the time

Am I on the right track or just smoking it? Thank you, John So it took a bit of time to sort through this but I finally made all my switches work properly. It turns out that the best approach is from the first diagram Ken posted in this topic. Here are the key changes: Connect the yellow wire from the turn signal control to the yellow input for the low beams at the fuse panel. Remove the combination relay. The 911 switch does not use one and it confounds the switch when it's in place. The yellow/red wire attached to the relay becomes the high beam (white) wire and connects through to the the high beam input at the fuse panel (if doing it again, I'd make a white wire off the the 12 pin junction corresponding to high beam input from the turn signal switch). This white wire is married to the fog light blue white wire at the fuse input. Fogs work as intended in early car. The white/black and red/white wires at the bottom of the diagram must be connected per the first diagram to the headlight switch. If anyone has questions on this conversion for an early car please let me know and I will be glad to help out. Now before all the wiring material is put away I'm going to set up a dual relay bypass for the headlights up int he frunk somewhere. Not exactly sure how I'll mount those. If anyone has a photo please PM me. |

If anyone has a photo please PM me. I suggest that you buy the JWest 911 headlight relay kit. It will do the same for a 914, but you have to extend the power wire all the way back to the battery. https://www.jwestengineering.com/Early-911-...5-73-_p_15.html |

Quite easy in this position. I have some paint work and wire tidying up to do, but I'm very happy with the headlight performance. Much brighter with my C4s. Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |
