My sweet 914 started me on the love of restoring old Porsches. And collecting trans-axle ones in mint condition. Ever since I restored a 1980 924 Turbo, I've longed for a 944 Turbo. But every one I looked at for the last 4 years led me to a "no way", "ain't happening". I gave up hoping and looking.
But Rick B (almost Concours '72 914, '68 912, '79 Concours 911 SC) didn't quit looking and found an incredible 951 for sale by its original owner who picked it up ant the factory with the Tourist Package, drove it over Europe, then had it shipped home. An aerospace engineer, he took meticulous car of it for 38 years, changing the Movil 1 oil every 3k miles, recording every gallon of gas he put in it, and all its maintenance. He loved it so much he bought an identical twin - to race. His 951 race car is now on PCA Mart for sale too. Friends checked the car out & assured me it was a good buy. And the seller gave me a huge discount. Yesteray I flew to Ohio and drove it home. The car did the 500 miles home like a new car would, and the owner assured me that it would do. He told me he'd pick me up if it failed in the first half of the trip home. Nary a glitch. The Fuch's were unique to the '86 and never offered before or after. Owner installed a larger Andial turbo about 2 years after he bought it. I love the color and the wheels - car is a knock-out. Engine starts on 1st rev and purrs silky smooth. Only shock driving home was to find the car is like new, 104k miles on it. Every thing works like new. Cruise control was a blessing. Never known a 30 year old car to have a tranny that shifts & feels like new - this one does. Most of the car looks new. Mechanically is operates like new. Just wanted to share my joy with all here who helped me get started. I think this is likely the last of my old Porsches, my 4th. I have a "poor man's" collection, but oh what a collection I have! Each one worth much more than I have in them. All run like new. i am a blessed man indeed.
