'74 2.0 25K miles, all original, all rebuilt
All, I am chasing the final item on this car, occasional firing miss. At idle and at speed the car occasionally misses, does not terribly effect driving but does effect my peace of mind.... I removed, while idling, each of the injector wires (new harness - thank you Bowsley) and the #1 wire had very small effect on operation. Also, the injector looked a bit weepy, gas leaking around the green plastic. While I was rebuilding the car, all of the injectors were sent to a Bosch guy here in Mass, who has the correct testing equipment. I also bought an additional set on EBAY and sent the originals plus the purchased injectors to him, 7 came back within calibration, one was DOA. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) Yesterday the fun began. I replaced the #1 injector with one of the rebuilt ones, it leaked......then I tried another.......it also leaked....... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif) THEN, I tried a new injector I purchased from a reseller, it is manufactured by Standard Motor Products and is listed as compatible with the '74 914 2.0. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/drooley.gif) 1. The hose is pressed onto the injector so I had to try and use it instead of my hoses. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) 2. The hose is too short, making the installation difficult (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) 3. The ID of the hose is too small so it was a force fit. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) 4. the Spray part of the injector is too short and also narrower than the original (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) 5. the fit on the manifold tube is not tight, (I had to make a gasket since the ones I had for the other injectors - all new gaskets- were too small (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dead horse.gif) I gave up on the new injector and re-installed the old one...... Here is the question: Has anyone had luck with these injectors, if so, did you cut off the hose? Are you concerned about the loose fit? Last, perhaps there is another manufacturer that I did not find that you can direct me to? Thank you Teeners! |

Injector to manifold should be fixed via proper injectors/gaskets. Loose fit on injector hose swap should be fixed by proper FI hose clamps as seen in previous post. I gave up on the new injector and re-installed the old one...... Here is the question: Has anyone had luck with these injectors, if so, did you cut off the hose? Are you concerned about the loose fit? Thank you Teeners! 1 The hose being crimped onto the injector would be a plus in my book but generally the crimp can be carefully dremmeled open and peeled off. 2 The injector hose would only be too short if your fuel rail is being held "too far away" from the injectors via their other flex hose attachment points. Pretty easily addressed. 3 ID to small is better than too big. (you do have the stock fuel rail?) Some heat and lubricant are your friends here. 4 The spray part of the injector's length shouldn't be an issue as other have mentioned. 5 The poor manifold fit should be fixed with the proper gaskets. Are you sure you received the proper Standard Motor injectors despite what was being offered on Ebay? |

Thank you for your replies - some responses in line below.
1 The hose being crimped onto the injector would be a plus in my book but generally the crimp can be carefully dremmeled open and peeled off. Yep, just checking if there is a shaft underneath that can take a hose and clamp? 2 The injector hose would only be too short if your fuel rail is being held "too far away" from the injectors via their other flex hose attachment points. Pretty easily addressed. I used hoses from 914Rubber, their length and curve, etc. seem perfect, the amount of length of the hose after the bend on the new injector seems very short in comparison. 3 ID to small is better than too big. (you do have the stock fuel rail?) Some heat and lubricant are your friends here. I do not agree, though I understand your point. These high pressure hoses have 3 lamination's. The internal laminate was ripped and pushed down the tube from trying to get it to fit over the larger pipe (which is the stock fuel rail), I would suggest that in this very important area that having everything fit to spec is a noble quest (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wink.gif) 4 The spray part of the injector's length shouldn't be an issue as other have mentioned. I did not receive any of the round gaskets, though I have spares (new) from the older injectors when I had them rebuilt. The shaft size at the manifold interface of the new injector is too small, needed to build one. I purchased the injector from a 914 parts company which listed it as compatible for the 2.0L engine and year. Thank you again for this information! [/quote] |
