!976 2.0 barn find, been sitting for yearsn no rust, good condtion. Going through brakes and chassis rubber, struts, shocks make a nice driver. Have not driven the car yet, has fuel injection, idle varies, vacuum leak? What is going on with no carburetors on a stock 2.0? Because of the camshaft timing carburetors do poorly? Is this true or a tale? Seems carburetors would be simple. Is this a myth of no carburetors on a 2.0? Thanks for the time and information. Steve V.

The European versions had carbs, but all the 914's in the US had Bosch FI. It is a great system if you can get it and keep it working well.

The European versions had carbs, but all the 914's in the US had Bosch FI. It is a great system if you can get it and keep it working well. only the euro-ROW 74/75 1.8s ever had carbs. rest were D Jet in europe as per america. no euro L jet cars. reason for carbs. not really anything to do with 914s. VW made the decision to drop the D jet from the 1974 VW 412s for cost reasons in europe and for emissionscost reasons in USA (D jet replaced by simpler cleaner L jet). to try and hold prices down during inflationary mid 70s. so the 914 got the euro VW mass market engine regardless. nevertheless a sweet little engine. high compression. 85 hp. carbs were big and off the industrial version of the type 4 engine. being solexs only downside. ok when new but quickly distort. leading to vac and fuel leaks. the bane of all old VWs once they got past about 5 years of hard use. also the 75 euro 1.8 is pretty much the rarest of all the 914s far as i can work out. 101 examples built. from the engine numbers. the twin carb 1.8 was only in the 914 in 1975. |
