Hello,

Can an aftermarket external oil tank be installed in the factory 6 location without removing the Type 4 engine in a 1973 914?

I would like to do all the conversion work that I can before dropping the engine.

Thanks!

Drilling the holes would be a challenge with any engine in the 914. Trying to picture a drill with that 4inch-ish hole bit leaning over into the small engine bay access.

I would rather drill the holes with engine out.

Can you imagine the wrist of the person trying to punch the 4.5” hole saw through leaning over the side of the car?

OP it’s not safe to punch the holes in the chassis with the engine in.
