I used this shop for my engine rebuild in 2022 not in Fullerton but not that far from you . Renato did a great job and and offered a very reasonable quote. He mainly builds hot VW but said he had no problem with my Type 4 ,he just doesn't do fuel injection only carburetors .

That should be a deal killer right there. why limit your build when SO much better is available.

I just delivered a built 2.3 with full aftermarket EFI yesterday. Absolute beast of a motor that also accelerates from 1800 in 5th gear going uphill at 8000ft elevation and pulls past 6500rpm.

EFI adds SO much to the drivability and day to day usability of the car that it shouldn't even be a question.

It was actually not bad I had them assemble my bottom end for me and he bench tested and broke it in only used his cabuerator set up on it . I assembled everything else and installed the motor with its original D-Jet FI . This was a big project for me and I still am working out some bugs dialing in the D-jet and passing California smog unfortunately . I had never assembled a motor on my own so it was worth it to have them put the lower end together for me . No leaks seems solid and they honored a previous quote given to the guy I purchased the car from . The challenge with car when I bought it was the motor had already been disassembled and my strengths were not in mechanics . I really wanted to do it myself but had no one to guide or assist me nor the tools and felt the lower end would better to be left to a professional . also I was getting quotes of10K + to do it for me from some local shops and just couldn't afford that much . Only time will tell if it was a good or just ok job .
