Hi,
I have been at it for a few weeks, using GUNK, Brake Cleaner, Electronic cleaners, scrubbing with drill driven scrubbing attachments, Dawn and then assorted other potions. I am left with a dull stained magnesium. I know that Vapor Blast is the best way, however, I cannot lug the engine to the Blaster outfit, Has anything worked well for you? Thank you Teeners! |

Replicating the mottled original Mag finish is nearly impossible since most of the chemicals used back then are banned or highly regulated now.
That said this set of original 914-6 covers was restored and touched up using very delicate media blasting (plastic or walnut shells) the pressure is very sensitive. Cleaning with non corrosive degreaser and nothing abrasive ( once scratched its not easily fixed). Finish touch-up is done with a light acidic solution followed by careful neutralizing. The final parts need to then be treated with a surface treatment that prevents further corrosion, those details are on many threads. This set of 4 took probably 10-12 hours in total to get to this state but they are totally as original, if that is your aim. ![]() |
