I voted #1, though it isn't truly correct for my car's state. She wasn't running when I got her due to a poor carb conversion. I could have had it running in a few hours of work. But I decided since that, and other things I found, suggested the previous owner was a hack mechanic, that I should really go through the car. So, she'll be in stands for at least the winter. Engine and tranny are both getting complete rebuilds with a mind to more performance. Hopefully by the spring thaw she'll be ready to be a driver, and kind fast. As others have alluded to, you can only go so fast with a type IV, even suped up...
