that's the main bearing(s) spinning in the case ... when the shaft is unsupported in the front, it "wobbles". that causes the main bearings to work themselves lose in the case. they can't go anywhere (back/forth) but they will spin in the case. that's the noise you get. it will get worse over time, causing the shaft to wobble under load, even if you now have the pilot bearing in the front ...
