the point made about design issues vs. flaws is where the difference really lies...

"For example, BMW vehicles have among the fewest defects and malfunctions, along with Toyota," said Ivers. "But BMW approaches controls and displays in a way that creates some problems for customers, leading to more design-related problems overall than Toyota incurs."

porsche's simple interiors leave no flaws in design, so their 91 problems per 100 were probably actual problems that required a fix... not just design flaws that the mfg. can do nothing about... they compared the Cayman to the TT,Vette, and benz slk AMG... I dunno about the TT, but the vette and benz have been notoriously ripped for issues requiring warranty work...

still, a good read, and I think it's about time that the award take into account bad design...

I beg to differ. I've worked on more then a couple of 996s and 997s, and the interiors arent "simple". They are really well thought out, but there are lots of panels with high quality fasteners. I tore apart a honda last week and it was filled with crappy fasteners and a poorly thought out (albiet cheap) interior assembly. I wouldnt say the porsche is any "simpler" then a honda, lexus, toyota, etc. only of higher quality matererials and better design.

Yeah yeah, I'm a Porsche fan... go friggen figure.
