had an '81 vanagon that i drove for years that eventually dropped a valve seat. i decided to rebuild the vanagon motor (my first) and had so much fun (?) that i wanted to do it again and bought a 74 914 not running. dropped the motor, got it running, had to sell it. couple of years later, bought another, 74 1.8, stored in garage many years. bought it, dropped and restored motor, it's a nice (at least i think so) driver. saw a 914 race car for sale, thought DE car. bought it. just swapped race motor for street motor.
