Love it or hate it, you've got to respect the fact that the car has been preserved in original condition for nearly 37 years. I love the fact that its unique and with the added bonus that its in beyond excellent condition. Although this car could (or should) be in a museum, I excercise the car every 5 to 6 weeks.

Here is my excercise schedule (2009) for all the cars. I do this to make sure that none of the cars sit without being driven for more than 6 weeks.

The front tire board sits higher due to the AC unit under the spare tire. Note the black tar glob covering a screw that holds the AC dryer inside the right front wheelwell.

Note the white substance on the top of the Left front shock tower. This stuff is applied by the factory. This car still has the original shocks installed. Also note the black brace holding the brake fluid reservoir in place and the original front hood seal. In fact, every rubber seal except for the inner door seals are the originals that were on the car when it was new and they're all in excellent condition. I use WURTH Rubber Care Gel on all the seals.

Note the original gas cap with a small VW logo engraved on top. Also note the AC sticker on the extension container put in place by the dealer that installed the AC.

The original Dunlop SP57 spare tire that has never been on the ground. Note the VPC AC condenser (square) beneath the wheel. You can also see the air connection for the spare tire that connects to the windshield washer fluid container (not connected).

Original spare tire and fuchs wheel. Remember the days when the spare wheel matched the other four wheels? Note the factory wheel weight still attached to the inner side of the wheel.

Although I haven't washed the car since Rennsport Reunion III back in November of 2007, its still fairly clean. Note the cad plated turn signal assembly bracket and other cab plated items related to the headlight assembly.

Original factory wheel center cap with the wide flange. All four in perfect condition. Note the green substance on the wheel. The car was delivered with this substance on the wheels. Some believe the factory slaps this substance on the end of the lug nuts which sometimes splashes onto the wheels to show that the lug nuts were torqued. With this substance still on the wheels proves they have never been refinished or restored.

The original Lackstift touch up paint (in Sahara Beige L 80 Z.1). These Lackstift applicators were found in the glove compartment of new 914's.

The original tool kit. Note the 2 breather holes in the black plastic tool bag. There are a total of 4 of these holes (2 in front and 2 in the back). Note the factory black rubber band to secure the tools inside the plastic bag.
For storage purposes, I keep the tool kit inside a neat little basketweave wrap. It helps preserve the tool kit and it also helps keep it in place inside the front trunk. I would remove this if the car was to ever be judged or shown. Attached image(s) |
