Thanks for the link but I did see it same time as you guys. It's now mine.
So a hot rod 3.0 is what I'm building, it's '79SC premo std/std core with nickisils, complete longblock except for flywheel. It was Shaun's personal project till he lucked into a deal on 2-3.2's, so it's suppose to be real nice. I'll should know real soon as he has some shipping deal and I'll have to pick up from the airport. Went through my 2.7 stash and I already have new ramps, chains, rod bolts and nuts, cam keys and pins, intermediate bearings and tensioner update kit. Is the opened 2.7 gasket kit any good to me? Is it the same except for the head gaskets? If not I'll sell it with the 2.7 core. So now I need to sell all the 911 stuff I don't need for phase two. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

I don't know enough about the guts of the 3.0L to give you a definitive answer.
The *gaskets* should fit, but were I in your shoes I'd buy the complete rebuild kit & sell off what you have. Everything you'll need is then in one box....and there's a shit load of "stuff". Don't forget those studs, they are not in the kit. What cams & pistons come with your new purchase? |

Just the stockers, but it has a mint set of nickisils.
I do have a set of 67 S cams, are they all the same? Wayne's picks engine just says early S cams. That's the engine I'm thinking of building. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) I'm searching on the bird, looks like I can but ol' Henry Schmidt says beware.... The stock 3.0L with headers & carbs will give around 200hp.......save you a couple grand too. How fast do you want to go?

I've been looking, I had the cash and I was fast. Includes shipping to Toronto airport, it's a smoking deal, suppose to be a nice engine. The gasket kit is the same except the head and base shims and cam plugs. I can get it all off the bird. Saves me $200 on the engine gasket set alone. I have at least $1K of new parts already. Studs on the list, none were broke but he tossed them out. Other nice thing is it's all been disassembled, cleaned and inspected, so that will save huge time and a PITA job. One thing you should budget is to have the stock 3.0 ignition distributor reworked to optimize for carbs. Barry Hershon ( Michigan ) or Jerry Woods ( California ) are two of the better known names that do this service. I have used both and for complete refurb either will charge about $500.00. Yes it's $$$ but I have been told that if you use a stock distributor from CIS that it's not going to run well with carbs, not sure if true but I wasn't taking a chance. I believe Henry at Supertec also provides this service. Slippery slope indeed don't even ask me how much I have invested into my GT clone (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) .

Dizzy comes with it, but if I have to spend $500 it's Megajolt jr. or MS and run ignition only. GM coils are dirt cheap (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) |

MSD all the way, fat wires, & plugs gapped to .045-.05. You do want to run it with carbs, eh?.....it took me 6 months to figure this out ....with help. If you use the CIS cams you may get away with mega-chump. I will explain why if you want.. |

But damn a set of JE's look sexy and Charles is a buddy. Smart thing would be just to re-ring this....with the wimpy 8.5 cr pistons. All I have is the weber 40's now, no CIS gear. I might do a megasquirt later or for $800 bucks SDS would modify my fuel injection for 6 cylinder. I think I'd only do a break-in with the Webers or the SDS. |

GM coils are dirt cheap (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif) I played around with MS and in my opinion it is crap but to each his own. Yes for 2 engines ( both 3.0 ) I spent nearly $1000.00 to have both OEM distributors brought up to snuff. They are basically brand new with bearings, bushings etc. all replaced and then the guys do their " voodoo " to make them work with carbs. To me it was money well spent because I can get plug wires anywhere and any mechanic or myself can set the timing. Plus it still looks stock. And we were able to just drop them in and go after setting the timing. Remember the 3.0 has a unique distributor that spins counter clockwise, this is different then other 911 engines. You need to do what you think is right AND what is within your budget. I was just pointing out something to think over. |

Can't afford that dizzy, ya bastard, would be able to do a twin plug cheaper the other way.
I've never done MS as well but I've done a couple of type fours on SDS, it just uses GM coils. Works real good. We'll see. I have a bit of time to decide on 200 vs 250hp and whether a 901 can handle it...or explode. 200hp is OK I guess. It would be the smart thing with a 901 I still have a local guru deal on a regrind cam for the carbs. He's suppose to know his stuff. Don't really want to mess with used CIS. |
