Do they have a conversion for the Type IV to use an upright cooling fan like the 911 or Type 1?

Do they have a conversion for the Type IV to use an upright cooling fan like the 911 or Type 1? Do it yourself Joe cali conversion. http://www.nextgen-usa.com/ DTM by Massive type4 (Jake Raby) Many 911 types, I like sharpbuilt for this type. I was looking at using it in the 914 for better cooling.
Is it worth it in the 914 ?? |

IMHO no it's not worth the bother, maybe if you're tracking it and looking for every ounce in weight savings and any advantage however small to cooling. . Jake has a DTM for the 914 it has no oil cooler provision so you have to do a whole cooler set up, lose the rain tray...etc |

Thats why I was confused. I see it for a transplant to a Beetle, but not in a 914.

Before making a REALLY big change to this, please take the time to do some evaluation of what's really the problem and what possible solutions are out there. Are you measuring head temps? Are you measuring oil temp? Do you have a larger displacement motor? Turbo? Hot cam? Or is the motor just tired? Or does the timing just need to be set? Or is it running lean? As you can see, there are a TON of questions that need absolute, definitive answers before a swap of the cooling system would be justified.

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) If you are thinking over do this for an overheating issue it's a band-aid on your elbow for a cut on your knee. Find the real problem not the symptom. |

I am having no real issues I just really asked as a point of reference as 914 world provides good answers and subjective opinions.

The stock cooling system is effective to around 210HP, around 52HP per cylinder when fitted to a properly configured and blueprinted engine.
Want to run cool? Build the engine efficiently. That comes from a guy that would love to sell you a 914 DTM, but knows you don't need it.. |

DO NOT go with the 911 style shroud , I made that mistake back 2004 , I've
had my share of issue's ( mainly unbalanced temps between cylinders ) , I didn't do my reserach & I chose because of the LOOK's & the COOL factor , I didn't think much about the IMPORTANT part , the FUNCTION of it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif) , If I was to do it over I would go with the DTM v2 ( 914 version ) or possibly a horizontal style ,again must do reserach . Ok confession over (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) Bill D. Attached image(s) |

All of those 911 pic's show why if I was inclined to do a 911 fan in a bug it would be a Sharpbuilt.
Number one reason is not one of those would the hood close in a bug, maybe even a teen would have issues, they are all too tall. The sharpbuilt also has some vanes to direct the air better. DTM or Joe Cali would be my picks and I've installed all three (plus a 911 FAT) types over the years. |
