Soo.. I've posted a few times on here, got my turn signals working fine while I was off with a bugger'd shoulder... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/mad.gif) Now my shoulder is good so its time to dig into this thing... I've now realized that the tar coating the underside of the car was doing a good job of covering up some real big problems.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) I have holes in both right and left rear longs, both rockers, front trunk, floors, firewall.. Transmission I'll have to rebuild, but other than leaky pushrod tube and oil cooler seals... the motor runs strong.. I'll post up some pictures, I'm sure you'll all want to see.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Here is a pic after I drove it home... rear wheels arent folding in and only the right door had a tight gap at the top... didnt look tooo bad when I looked at it.. figured some rocker work and I'd have er' back running in the summer...

Heres a pic of the hole in the front trunk.. it also has holes under the headlight buckets.. I dont want to take off the front fenders so it will be a fun one for sure... Also, pictures of the hole in the firewall... yes thats spray foam... added in a few places under the tar... for sturctural rigidity I'm assuming.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/WTF.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) battery tray has been replaced alread, but its gotta come out.. its actually solid in behind it...

Here is right and left side rocker covers off... the DAPO Brazed them on... chewed through 8 small cut off discs for my die grinder getting them off..

here is the firewall and left side.. rocker has been replaced ( poorly ) but its solid.. not solid enough for my liking so its coming out... but it wont fold in half tomorrow...

The one that is most .... bothering to me.. is the last picture... Left side rear long needs some serious attention and welding.. AND... the engine mount bracket has a hole in it.. there is still lots of good metal on it.. so I'm wondering if i can patch it.. but i'm undecided... I uncoverd this and just wanted to (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)

I want to keep it a 4 cyl... so making sure those engine mount brackets are solid will be very important to me..
I dug out the posted I bought and framed probably 10 years ago.. I've wanted a 914 for a long time.. Other things got in the way... wife, house, 2 kids... but now I have my work ahead of me... Sold my motorcycle to buy a new air compressor and welder... should be getting good use out of them...

just spray more of that black crap in there, it will glue the chassis back together

Oh ya.. the car used to be white... as can be seen in some parts after i scraped off the tar... The outer body work/paint wasnt too bad actually... it even had the old trunk rack which is in great shape, but I wont be using it.. I have one good saving grace tho.. I only live about 30-40 minutes away from Restoration-Design... Soooo I can go pick up parts as money allows.. Unfortunately I'll have to fab up sheetmetal for the left side... might have to buy a brake..

Looks like you have some work ahead of you. I like the look of the car. By chance did you purchase it from someone in Seattle, WA? I remember seeing a car for sale that looked exactly like yours a while back.

Not the car from Seattle... I'm in Ontario Canada.. that'd be one hellova drive to get it here... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
Allllllll winter... Lotsa kerosene and propane for the heaters.. and a VERY patient wife.. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Thing is.. I work at the Toyota plant here... build cars all day... building another one in my garage by night... and I am helping restore a WWII bomber with a museum some weekends... yay for sheet metal work... ugh...

Looks like someone at one point welded in a flat piece of metal to fix a rotted long. And now that piece has started to rot as well ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/barf.gif)

yes there has definitely been some metal welded on a few spots on the car.. rockers, floors, around the front bumper mounts... If the DAPO would have just put some por15 on it or ANYTHING... I wouldnt have to be doing this again now.. lol.. ugh Yes it will be a long project... one foot infront of the other...

Well.. I managed to get the drivetrain out yesterday... the set of instructions that I was going from was missing 2 key things.... 1... no mention of disconnecting the MPS wire harness connector and we almost riped it out when lowering the motor.. 2.. and most importantly.. I was under the impression that the engine cradle bar was actually bolted to the engine... My brother in-law and I didnt have the engine/trans balanced properly first shot and when I unbolted the transmission the whole bloody lot fell down about 2" from my chest.. I got out in a hurry and the whole thing kept sliding backward and coming down. So, after a few minutes running around making sure everything was clearing ( found the connected MPS connector) we lifted up the exhaust pipes and put jackstands under the trans mount ears and lowered the engine down untill it was straight..

But through all of this I got some GOOD news on the body... looks like the inner suspension console looks great... engine shelf is nogood and the hellhole looks like ... well a hellhole... but I think I'll be able to just section the rear long ( and sleave it ofcourse) and not have to cut the entire thing out..

The bad news though is the engine cradle bar bolts were seized really well... and with the engine tilting rearwards and sliding .. the only fast option was to cut the cradle bar off so I'll be looking for one of those eventually..
