I told you not to use 1st gear ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/burnout.gif)

You did... I have a used 901 in there now which is working fine but it has a weak 3rd gear which is strange. I never touch 1st anymore.

Everything else seems fine... well except for the case. I am thinking of swapping the case out and the differential and trying again.

FYI third gear is totally fine in the 901 I currently have in the car. I adjusted the linkage below the shifter and click it goes in nicely to every gear. I'm as happy as a 914 owner can be.

Thanks Enrique. It works well too. The re-engineered linkage and shifter feel more like a modern car rather than a mop in a bucket. I like it better than my friends 997 which I believe is a cable linkage.

So when I asked the question about the gold car in post #47, I was right, it's a VIN swapped car. That's a big no no. And it looks like it's up for sale? Wow!

Yeah, if that was a VIN swap - sorry, illegal. I would not touch that car.

Yup, ducked the question back then -

I'm confused. Post #27- one picture shows a rusty yellow car with a 6 and another pic shows a silver car that just got flares welded on but still needs bodywork and paint? Are they the same car?

It's a long story... there are many hours and lots of welding and decades between the gold pictures and the silver pictures. I wish I had more in between pictures. I didn't take the gold pictures those are from years before I got it.

I'd like to give a shout out to two people that helped me make this happen by supplying excellent parts and expert advice:

George Hussey and Jim Patrick. With their help anything is possible!

Isn't there a thread on here discussing AA selling a cut out VIN! Was it a six?

There was a fellow from the East Coast who frequented the board on sixers and rare teeners over on The Early 911S Registry who spoke to the issue gallantly defending the ethics of vin swapping.

He was from another country and had a huge array of quite rare and exotic Porsches..... yet when called on the carpet for his sometimes bizarre defense of the practice, would get very defensive.

One day several years ago he asked one of the forum moderators to dispose of all his threads he was associated with, whether he started them or not.
Just like that he was gone. All the photos, all the discussions and lengthy threads........

I cannot help but feel we are going thru a similar turmoil here with this as well.
It's gut wrenching and sickening. It cuts to the core of a hobby we all enjoy. It cuts to the very essence of trust. Of ethics. Of purity of the marque.

I am so sympathetic to the unknowing buyer. Because due diligence was cast aside, and emotions ruled the buying moment, another victim has been bitten.

In reading thru all the past posts there is mention of numerous vehicles getting rebuilt in the past.

How valid were any of those ? And do some of us here now own something it never was to begin with ?

sad. so VERY sad.

This car belongs on The Black List. I think we should use it to start one.

What if you as a new bee saw this advertised as a -6 with a COA (cause you only need the numbers and $100 to get one). You fell in love with the car and it was such a bargain, not much more than a nice -4. You bought it and found out later that you had been Ripped off?

At the price of a nice -6, as they are reaching for $100,000.00 today. If you got convicted you are going away for a long time.

By the way, it is only illegal in Ca. because the DMV was not getting the tax it wanted for the cars that were being built in that state.

You can't ligaly change the numbers on a car……

Let's not let the -6 go the same way as the Tri-5 Chevys. Or else they will be every where.

Yet another reason that when one does a restoration on a Six to photo-document everything from beginning to end.

My car has been documented like that. Though it is taking Scotty some time ( (IMG:style_emoticons/default/icon8.gif) ) when my car is done, no one will be able to question its authenticity - assuming they have a brain.

VIN swapping is fraud- plain and simple.

So where is this for sale? Not looking to buy, just want to be able to spread the word to any potential buyers.

Looks like Dean sold on eBay back in 2014 for $36,500. Advertised as a factory six with a 911 3.6L.

If some fool wants to believe this is a real /6, then they get what they deserve for not doing their homework. It's too bad that the original vin wasn't left on the car and we could admire it as a hotrod teener.

Google search that no doubt doesn't work anymore as the 2040 site pulled the add down after I think Mike? got in touch. I didn't screenshot the actual website with pictures and blurb for posterity (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)
