I brought the car under some control to a stop and lining it up to get back out on track because at first I thought I screwed up but when I was slowing down I could hear the clunk clunk of the CV. I was in 4th place at that time with 7 laps to go. |

I have done nothing with the race car this winter, the CV is still broken.
I did run across a 3.0L engine last fall that I think I will race with this season. I recently found a killer deal on theses heads |

you should add a pan
here is the aluminum one that we made to keep the weight down a complete A-hole drove me off of the road on the outside of a hair pin with a huge drop off.... (8-10 inches) 2 wheels off and the pan took damage but no damage to any other componenets. you should really keep the car more authentic thats what is special about your car and in IMSA it would have been allowed up to a 2.5 (maybe take the period correct case from the 2.2, and build a 2.5 twin plug?) you should add a pan Certainly a thought for the future you should really keep the car more authentic thats what is special about your car and in IMSA it would have been allowed up to a 2.5 (maybe take the period correct case from the 2.2, and build a 2.5 twin plug?) No it actually ran a 3.0L RSR spec engine From the 1987 IMSA rule book |

I guess it depends upon what year of rules you look at...
certainly when your car ran it was older rather than newer. in 1976 it was 914's at 2.5 and 911's at 3.0 what year do you wnat the car to be authentic at? I guess I haven't followed your thread close enough... but are you really trying to recreate 1987? |

fair enough
in the 1976 season the 914/ was limited to 2.5 and the regular 911 at 2.7 and the RSR at 3.0 as I look at post number 6, it looks like the car began racing in 1971 and then went into GTU in 1984 GTU was the under 2.5liter class... GTO was the over 2.5liter class... so it couldn't have legally been a 3.0 car at that time. vintage cars always come back to what year are you trying to recreate.... what year was the hey day for that car? |

so it couldn't have legally been a 3.0 car at that time. By 1987 rules creep had upped the GTU limit to 3 liters. Thats the accepted standard for GTU in some vintage clubs. I remember watching TV and attending IMSA races around 1986-87, and seeing a couple of 914s still running in GTU, but they were no longer competetive. |

so many of the vintage clubs out west won't allow newer cars in
1967 was the old cut off and that has almost universally turned into 1972 now... a few out here go to 1981 when they use a cut off like 1972 or 1981, that isn't the cars production date, but the cut off used for the rules the car can be built to but none of the bigger clubs out here go much newer than that (or the ones that due are more "racing clubs" than vintage clubs. Kind of a run what you brung type of club that allow anything in.) I've been in CVAR, RMVR, and HMSA and all of them adhere to older rules. Some of the clubs like HMSA (who runs Monterey) get some really good turn outs. The altec-lansing car was out last october at coronado when I was there. They kept it to a pretty early set of specifications. The majority of the 914/6's out here are running 2.0 motors. |

I agree with you guys, I will eventually get back to a high powered 2.5L but that will be in the other IMSA 914/6 914 043 0945. I am looking for a quick infusion of power for this season and this engine came alone. I race in a local club called Midwestern Council and in the vintage class everything pre 1972 runs together including 500 hp Mustangs, Corvettes and Cobras. I am just looking to be more competitive with them.

Today I added balsa wood the rear lid Do you remember where you purchased that balsa wood from? also what weight FG were you using? (4oz, 2oz..?) I have that same deck lid and want to add structure just like you have done so any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! |
