don't know exactly what this is called, but I'm calling it the valve retainer.
it looks to be all used up.

This is a shot of the cam lobe from the valve that broke the rocker.

This is the valve next to the one that broke.
I see some nicking on the top. Is this a concern? Or does it not really matter since it needs work anyway?

Well, I found more damage. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) And it looks like the engine got water in it while the car was sitting outside.

Sorry dude,

But the good news is you will certainly have the best advising you on the repair.

Forgive my questions, but I am always trying to learn here. Where is the damage in the head pics, and how did water get in the engine

this is one of the pushrods, not from the damaged head, not even that side of the motor. What the heck is the band? It's fairly deep.

Chris,
The damaged head dropped a valve. Also, you can see the broken rocker.
The car sat outside for a month before I dropped the motor. My car doesn't have a raintray, so I can only assume that water got in through the air filter assemblies of the carbs.

Bummer,

Just so ya know, I'm sure you will be using new parts for the important stuff, but if you need an odd or end, my 75 and 76 2.0's are at your disposal. (Like a rain tray (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) )

thanks for the offer, but I got rid of my rain tray. My car usually sits in the garage, but I left it out so I could crawl under it. Now I've got a 20' awning in the driveway to basically extend the garage. It's actually nice to have, shade in the sun and cover in the rain. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)
