I saw a pst the other day with a link to a Type 3 site. A friend of mine is bringing home a 68 1/2 Fastback w/ FI and an automatic. Any info on these cars would be appriciated.

Really cool cars. I think I've seen more 914's than fastbacks. I just got through with the rebuild on the 1600 in my 70 fastback, still working the bugs out of the F.I. don't have much experience with the automatics though.

Any recomended sites or forums? I know my way around VW's, but I'm sure the Type 3's have thier ways about 'em like anything else.

I had a 69 fastback with the Djet, what a great little car. Also had a 64 Squareback 1500S which was a euro model only. Had 66hp and a gas heater which made it a good ski car.

Another good site is vwtype3.org. If you need parts, I recommend ISP West www.vwispwest.com, as they specialize in Type 3s. As far as the automatic, there's only one shop I trust with that transmission, and that is the Bug Stop in Arlington, TX www.texasbugstop.com.

Not as fancy as this board, but full of good info and knowledge. I used to hang out there alot when I had my '69 Fastback. I don't have a picture of it on my office computer here, but it was very cool - wish I still had it now. Red with cream/yellow/red/purple flames and 2.0 Fuchs alloys. Oh, and it was an automatic as well so my wife could drive it. Fastbacks are the best of the Type 3's (IMHO)!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) |

Thanks for the info guys. I think the car is coming home on Friday. Needs all the lights/blinkers/trim put back on, should be together in a week or so though.
Any thoughts on an engine that hasn't been started in four years? I was thinking just change the oil, filter, clean the strainer, check the ignition & FI and fire her up. Sound like a decent plan? I'd like to take care of this car as much as possible, the new owner is a redneck who needed a project, so I'm hoping he doesnt like it and I can buy it from him. Alex,
After four years of not running, I'd at least: Change the oil. Clean the strainer (there's no filter unless someone added one). Drain the gas tank and pull the pickup and replace the screen. Attempt to blow out the fuel lines with compressed air and Gumout to clean them. Replace the fuel filter. You may might want to pull the plugs and replace them. Squirt some marval oil or some such thing down the cylinders Attempt to turn the engine over by hand with a wrench on the fan pully bolt, make sure it's free to turn - kind of hard to get to the bolt on a T3 engine... Put a battery in and cross your fingers. Good luck! |

Since this car has Djet - CHANGE ALL THE RUBBER FUEL LINES! Just like the 914's with FI the fuel lines are carrying 29lbs of pressure soooo if they crack they spray gas all over the hot engine and catch fire!

I drive a Type3 chassis Avenger kit car nearly every day. I always think of the motor as a baby 914.
You might want to pull the injectors, clean them, insure thay are not stuck then replace the seals. If you find the pump is stuck it can be taken apart and varnish removed. Replace all fuse hoses! Sorry to be repetitive Run a piece of clean paper through the FI points to clean them. Ignition points could be oxidized if it fails to spark. |
