Also, if you want to make it much easier to change the alternator belt, get one of these:

Clewett serpentine belt kit. It makes life much easier.

Well... like everything else, that took longer than expected but I drove home yesterday with a fresh 3.8.

I'll post more details and photos once I get things sorted and cleaned up a bit.

Next up is the interior and... I think that's it! Oh maybe new tires...

I’m learning.
What Piston/Rod/crank makes a 3.8?

What case can be used?

What heads can be used?

How big can I build a 3.0, reasonably ?

This is a 1991 964 3.6 engine with stock crank but 102mm pistons to make it 3.8 liter.

For your other questions on the other engines - I have no idea! I do know a solid, reliable, totally stock 3.0 in a 914 in plenty and super fun to drive and way better than a non-running project car!

When I freshened my 3.0 liter, I kept the SC case and put in a Carerra 3.2-liter crank. At the same time, I bought Mahle Max Moritz style high compression 98 mm pistons and cylinders. The 74.4 stroke of the 3.2 l crank and the 98 mm bore yields 3.4 Liter. I also had the heads machined for twin plug. I use an Electromotive crank fire ignition and with open exhaust and race fuel the engine made 290 hp at the wheels or about 335 crank hp. Now that I'm running a muffler, I'm probably down 30 hp. I think there are P's and C's available that can get you to 3.5 liter.

Getting the interior back in... It is crazy what a difference a little sound deadening and the back pad makes in the interior volume.

Seats in. Can also see how my drivers seat is a bit lower than the passenger seat (I'm 6'6").

And the first repair. Ha. The clutch cable broke for some reason. Was new. Really strange. Everything appears to be working right and aligned and no binding/etc. Hmmm....

New clutch cable in.

And showing off Marty's headers. They were jet hot coated and look great.
