After purchasing a running 72 in October, and then deciding to replace the tail shifter with a side shifter I had out of my 75 car after 1 drive across the county. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)
And the myriad things that needed to be done while the motor and trans were out. (not limited to, weld up the clutch tube and some minor hell hole repair, new cv's, replace rear rubber brake lines on the front brakes with SS, SS fuel lines, relocate fuel pump etc) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) All with the guidance and expertise of Cary over at Middle Motors. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/KMA.gif) My "running 72 to tide me over until I'm done restoring my 75" is back on the road!!!! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/piratenanner.gif) So to celebrate I took it out for a spin in the rain to teach my wife and her dog Zuess, how to drive a manual shift car. This at the same place I taught her to drive 2 short years ago. A couple more practices and she will be ready for the DE I signed us up for next month. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/evilgrin.gif) |

Set the timing on the new 123 dizzy and drove it...
had installed a oil temp gauge and during the ride the temps just kept on climbing. and it was only 50 out. turned out the cooling flaps were stuck in the cold position and wouldn't open to let air past the oil cooler. Dangerously high. This was the second time I drove it since reinstalling the engine and it was just static timed the first time. Fortunately discovered the problem and all seems to be fine now. will take it for a longer ride tomorrow. |

Decided to take another wack at adjusting the Rennshifter. Put the car outside on level ground, chocked the front tires, raised the rear only and put on jack stands. Got out Jame’s instructions and went through it again, but this time taking care the shifter in neutral was perpendicular to the housing. Started the car, released the handbrake, and drove her through the gears with no issues. Engagement was precise and direct. Turned the car off and set the handbrake. Lowered the car and took it for a drive.
The first 5 minutes went great. The gears were right where they should be, but at minute 6, when down shifting from 4 to 3, I went into 5. Hmmmm. Tried it again with same result. S-word! Then after moving the shift lever to the left of the 2-3 plane, found second, the damn bolt wasn’t tightened enough. Drove down to a 2 mile road through the farms which dead ends. Loosened the bolt and spent 5 minutes trying to get the alignment right and then the rod fell out of the coupler 3 Miles from home without an Allen key to remove the shifter to reinsert the shift rod. Also no mobile phone to call on, S-word. Got lucky and managed to fish it up and reinserted using a screwdriver and vice grips. Then spent the next 5 minutes readjusting, luckily I had used a paint pen originally to mark the Xand Y orientation on the rod and the coupler. Aligned the X and Y and tweaked it a bit to the left, and tightened it down. Not quite right. Move it a tweak, while the shift rod was held with the vice grips, tighten and try it. Bam! Right on for first and second. Cinched it down and off I go. All the gears are dead on. Stop the car and tighten the piss out of the bolt and enjoy the best shifting I have ever experienced in 14 years. Grinned all the way home. Got home and got out my big socket wrench and tightened the bolt one last time, fortunately not breaking off the head. Buttoned things up and am looking forward to the next rain free day. |

Good to hear. The shifting in the 'BB' isn't all that bad, but looking forward to installing the Rennshifter I got from Steve anyway (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)
