On Sunday, I got out and drove: there was a small Cars and Coffe in San Mateo:
And I did a little more resurrection work on these 7" Fuchs: Trying to preserve the factory rim and lip finish as is (not concours, but presentable), but the centers were in bad shape and needed refinishing. I have a set of matching 8's that will be getting the same treatment. And before you point it out, yes that tire is old / cracked / scrap and will be replaced. |

Finally finished rebuilding both Weber 44's, will mount right one and throttle linkage hardware tomorrow.......then on to re-installing refurbished gas tank, fuel pump and new fuel pressure regulator, new fuel sending unit. Thankfully Porsche dealer installed new fuel lines when they put the Webers on over 15 years ago.
If all goes as planned, hope to have her running in next week....... (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/oi890.photobucket.com-21449-1555375101.1.jpg) GN |

44s are sort of large for a 2.0L. What's your jetting?

Mark -
Yes, we had this discussion when I first got the car, and several mentioned this. I purchased Bob Tomlinson's "Original Weber Tech Manual" - Super Tune-up guide for VW and Porsche engines, and in it, it specifically has a jetting table that says for Dual Carb 44's the jetting is as follows: "Weber Jetting Guide for Air-Cooled VW Engines" For Dual IDF 44 Carbs: Engine CC's Venturi Main Jet Main A/C 1835-2000cc 36mm 1.55 2.00 2000-2234cc 36mm 1.60 2.00 My venturi's are 36mm, the Main Jets are 1.35, A/C jet is 1.75 - both smaller than the max. This reduction in jetting size makes me wonder if the Porsche dealer didn't have to reduce the jets when they installed the carbs - to get the engine to run well. Their work performance sheet clearly states, "Engine is running well." The E/Tube, Idle jet and P/Jet are all as per the table. So, "by the book", it would appear that the jetting is actually acceptable. The book did not mention that these jet settings were only for engines that had been internally modified. Two other points. 1. When I ordered my rebuilt rear brake calipers from PMB Performance, the tech there asked a lot of questions about my car, as they are 914 rebuild experts. He said the 44's would be fine with the 36mm venturi's and smaller jets. 2. My very good friend in whose modern barn the car was parked for 12 years (an excellent mechanic himself) told me he had a good ride in the car with the owner (another good friend of his) and actually rode into the barn in the car when it was parked. He assured me that the car was running great when it last ran and he was riding in it. My thought has been since learning of the 44's being over-sized to rebuild the carbs (done) and get the car running and see how it runs - and then deal with the issue from first hand experience. Many here strongly advised finding the original FI system and installing it - and I did just that. I purchase a system pulled off a member's '76 here. But PMB Performance told me to not do that. They said that many parts are now impossible to find and putting together a good system today is almost impossible. They used to do that, but don't anymore because of unavailability of parts. I know you know 1,000 times what I do, and I respect your thinking greatly. I should have the engine running in a week - working on fuel system now - almost all new/refurbished..... Thanks for the help, as always. GN 44s are sort of large for a 2.0L. What's your jetting? |

44's will work fine the only thing you'll lose is a tad of throttle response which with a type 4 engine will be pretty much unnoticeable.

Cut the old fuel connections off the NOS Bosch injectors. Tried to find some one to crimp new feruels on the new hoses. Said I would need old style hand crimper to get job done. Went with new SS fuel hose clamps from Autohausz and new fuel hoses from George at AA. Set clamps up with two to the left and two to the right so when they are installed they can be tightened from the outboard side. Dd not cut hose length yet, will do that when installing runners. Went ahead and installed seals on the injectors.

Replaced my cracked front side markers with new LED side markers.
Before: (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i.imgur.com-18880-1555456662.1.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i.imgur.com-18880-1555456663.2.jpg) After: (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i.imgur.com-18880-1555456663.3.jpg) (IMG:http://www.914world.com/bbs2/uploads_offsite/i.imgur.com-18880-1555456663.4.jpg) Ended up using these 3" United Pacific marker/turn signal lights. They support flashing, but, when the headlights are on the marker light brightness and the turn signal brightness are pretty darn close in intensity so it's hard to tell. When the headlights are off they're super nice though. |

Chi-town - As I'm a 914 novice/ignoramus - what is a "type 4" engine? As I've never driven any 914 in my life, I can't see how I'd notice and almost unnoticeable slow throttle response! Heck, with only 87hp, I wouldn't think it had any throttle response at all! Question: Original Owner's Manual says engine is 84hp. Elsewhere I've read 100. Which is true? Will the Weber 44's help any? TIA, GN |

A bunch of stuff, dust off parts of the car and put the dash back together. The tach still needs to be hooked up. But she looks good, too me anyway.

I took off time from the '914' transport vehicle (aka: trailer/conversion) project to start digging the perimeter outline for additional parking/work space in the back yard (the area in the left side of pic will get paved).
A couple of friends will be coming by tomorrow to help get the rest of the area dug out and deeper so a nice new 4" concrete slab addition can get poured there (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif) Getting quotes for an 18' x 18' metal shed (double garage) too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif) . |

Replaced the speedo cable that broke on the Rt66 Classic event. That should have taken about an hour but instead took all day because I had several wires ran thru the speedo cable hole in the firewall that had to be removed before the new cable would fit. And I did some wiring cleanup when putting it back together.
Repaired the cracked windshield that also occurred on Rt66. Finally did some routine maintenance getting her ready for the drive to Okteenerfest: changed oil, new spark plugs and rotate/balance tires. |

As I'm a 914 novice/ignoramus - what is a "type 4" engine? Gatornapper, The four cylinder engine (1.7, 1.8, and 2.0 liter) in the 914 is a VW Type 4 engine. It was originally designed by VW for the 411/412 (T4) series of cars, later used for the 914 and VW transporter (T2 and T3) van. |
