Drove both of them today... had some issues with the '71 that cleaning the idle jets took care of. Test drove it for 20 or so miles to and from my shop- traded if for the '73 and drove it home...
I love the '72 targa I just finished a restoration on, but nothing drives like a 914!!! Still love driving my '71 just like I did when I got it nearly 50 years ago! (yeah, that dates me...) |

Some idle jets never see fuel, dependes on the system. If it regulates the amount of air in your idle mixture the dirt is coming from the top of the carb inside the air filter.
Got the windscreens mounted on Carerror today. |

Drove the car for the first time in 2 years. Had a problem with the clutch which would not disengage, but after that it ran like a dream.
I had forgotten how much fun it was to drive a 914 |

I had forgotten how much fun it was to drive a 914 Top off, beautiful day, running great, and an open road - it is a ton of fun and really doesn't get any better. Mine ran smooth as silk today as I moved her from Virginia across the bay bridge to her new home on the Eastern Shore. I promised she'll never have to sleep outside in the rain, ice, or snow again (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) And I introduced her to her new "power pack" sitting there in the corner on a furniture dolly just in front of her. It will be a few weeks, but that's going in at some point. Just need to move all my tools. And my lift. And...a bunch of other stuff. |

put the back end up on ramps. i found 3 pushrod tubes leaking altogether and the pressure relief piston cover screw was loose. i put a touch of gasket seal around the push rod seals as a temporary fix until i can get to work on the engine. hopefully it will see me through the summer. i'm going for an op next week and will be physically restricted fpr a while.
I also washed it for the first time this year, i think. |

Replaced my front soft lines. Didn't have much luck bleeding the brakes, but I had enough pedal to pull it out front for a quick bath. This is the first time it's been out of the garage in a few years. I'll call that progress!

Although I have a Mighty-Vac and other 'one-man' brake bleeding tools, I typically try to enlist the help from a neighbor or my wife to pump the brake pedal.
In any event, I'm a long way off of performing any brake bleeding sessions at the moment (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

On Saturday Chris Baker (tygaboy) came down and helped (did 90% of the work) install my new 3/4 inch Maxline air lines and fittings. I need to order a few small fittings and I will be able to finish the rest by myself. Thanks Chris!
Sunday I painted my 911 3.5 inch struts, did not want to lay them down on the table and flip around. Had this aluminum u-channel and some extra inserts. A couple of drill holes later: |

While I've been quiet, I've been steadily working on my '76 - fuel lines ready for system test under pressure, if all is tight, in goes the fuel tank, fuel goes in the tank, and we actually try to fire her up for the first time in 13+ years.......
But first, the new rear brake calipers I just received from PMB Performance need to be installed so the car will roll - old ones were totally seized. Getting rear discs turned now, should have them tomorrow, old calipers off and ready to be returned to PMB. The rear pads were almost new, little wear. 1 hours work should have rear calipers ready to bleed. PO installed front brakes from a BMW 320 - and except for being layered in rust, all is well up front, like-new pads there as well. But I just don't think rusty front calipers will look good with new ones in the rear - so I am cleaning them up to look new and painting them a gold so they will look somewhat like the new rear ones from PMB. Also picked up new, high-$$$ sealed battery as there is no rust on the battery tray now nor any below it - and I want to keep it that way. Sure is nice having a Teener from So. California when you live in Virginia..... GN Lord willing, my goal is to have the car running and on the road by the weekend. |

Question: As my '76 is a California car, it has the catalyst, which I plan to soon remove....the last thing that little motor needs is exhaust restriction.
Does anyone make an insert to fit exactly where the catalyst goes? TIA, GN |
