Pulled the wheel and shipped it to Dallas Custom Steering Wheel and all 6 of the gauges will be dropped at North Hollywood Speedo for a freshen, the tach dampened and the speedo recalibrated for the current tire size.
Turn signal switch will get replaced as one of the cancel tabs was broken off and the wiper switch will get replaced to accommodate an electric washer pump. |

Ordered new .060 idle jets. Hoping they solve my problems between idle and WOT.
Put 2 coats of primer on my beautiful Mahle's, waiting 4 days before I start painting them with L91 original color paint from Wolfsburg West...... GN |

Received my .060 idle jets for my Weber IDF 44's yesterday and installed them last night, pulled the .050's.
Hoping to now get some smooth transition power from idle to 2,000 - 2,500 rpm...... Will test drive today & hopefully set idle mixture screws, balance carbs........ GN |

Thursday - installed PMB restored calipers on all 4 corners, had to re-make hard lines for front brakes. Thankfully I bought a brake line flaring tool years ago for a Toyota project. Seems some PO had installed some beemer calipers. PMB refurbished calipers almost too pretty to hide behind wheels.
Friday bled brakes, painted new/used front valence, detailed front bumper and fog lights. Cleaned and re-oiled K&N air filters, re-set carb synchronization. Saturday, installed newly repainted front valence, installed detailed fog lights and front bumper, bled brakes (again). Drove it and bedded in pads. Bled brakes (again) and re-set pad/rotor clearance on rears. Today (Sunday) drove it. Still need to bleed more air out of the lines. |

My little red 914 has a BRAND NEW ENGINE! I CANNOT BELIEVE IT! The 60 idle jets are perfect!
Don’t think it could run better if it were new! Well, it is idling a bit fast at about 1200 rpm…….but IT HAS MORE POWER THAN EVER and is smooth as silk in all power situations, slow acceleration, fast acceleration, light on the pedal, hard on the pedal, from off pedal to just barely touching it she has nice smooth power, pulling smoothly under all load conditions. Cruises easily at 70mph just barely touching the pedal. No coughing, surging, missing, stumbling, backfiring or anything like that - purrs smoothly at idle better than ever. I am honestly shocked at how well it is running - thought the new jets would take some tweaking for sure - but now it’s running so well I am honestly afraid to touch anything. As the 60’s were 20% larger than the 50’s, I dialed each idle mixture screw in about 1/2 turn after putting them in, knowing they would need to be leaned out a bit. The idle speed screw is not touching the throttle, and she’s idling a bit fast…..so I may have to turn the idle mixture screws in just a tad more. I also thought jumping from 50’s to 60’s might not work and there was a chance I’d have to drop down to 55’s - but at this point I think the 60’s could not be improved on. The engine is running so well and has so much power that I cannot imagine the D-jet running it any better - or producing more power. It is interesting that in Bob Tomlinson's Weber Tech Manual for VW & Porsche engines, his chart clearly says that the proper idle jets size for dual IDF-44's on a 2.0 is 60. But even if I had installed them in March, they would not have worked well because of the serious vacuum leaks at the base of the intake manifolds - only 2,000 miles after the local Porsche dealer installed them.....which I diagnosed, located and corrected only a couple weeks ago. Who ever expects loose intake manifold bolts only 2k miles after they are installed by a dealer????? Cannot thank all of you enough for all your support and patience through this long ordeal - but I think we are almost there on the engine side - needing only to put the cooling flaps in and installing a new alternator……. Doc -
Thank you so much - and thank you for not chewing me out for sticking with my carbs for now - (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) But my plan from day one has been to first get the engine running well with the carbs and make sure all the engine internals are good. And consider my D-jet going in after that. This little car is more fun to drive than my Cayman S with a re-mapped ECU, and will become my daily driver soon! Someday we need a re-paint restoring it to its original Malaga Red. Much more to do - but it's all fun - making progress...... GN PS: EVERYTHING is working on the car! Cept my alternator.....
