Went for another drive this morning. Beautiful day for it here in San Diego.

Got what I wanted on the trailing edge of the rear wing this evening. Making up the edge sure made it come out clean.

2.5 hours running a blast cabinet. Oiled the parts that are being set aside for plating, then painted the trailing arms and pivot brackets.

SKL1 and I have similar timing - but his engine looks new (so I wonder why he dropped it), but mine clearly hasn't been dropped ever and has 44 years of dirt, grease & junk covering it.

Dropped it today with the great help of Rickb45 who is my close-by resident friend who is an 914 expert on so many things. Few hangups on right carb where fuel line attaches and a couple other glitches, but overall went well.

With car on my 10k lb. lift, we dropped engine onto 4x12's on a motorcycle lift table which gives me multiple great heights to work on engine.

Long list of TTD's (Things to Do): new alternator (harness looks great, like rest of car - as you'd expect for a car with only 60k miles ), install cooling vanes a former PO had removed, install new T'stat from AwesomePowderCoating, remove, clean & repaint tins, completely & thoroughly clean both engine & transmission, clean & repaint engine bay - and whatever else shows up as needing to be done.

Here's a pic of Rick at the end of the job - a huge public thanks for all the help!

PS: note how clean and rust free the pan is...incredible......as Rick keeps telling me, this is a gem of a car in amazing condition in every way......

I have to finish assembling 'HOWARD's motor (all the F.I. stuff) before it goes back in.

I'll be dropping the Ghia's drive train first though - to replace the howling transmission as well as some other goodies that go between the motor & the tranny.

Thanks to the MASSIVE GENEROSITY of (IMG:style_emoticons/default/pray.gif) @ValcoOscar

I was able to borrow his trailer to take my 6 from San Diego to Phoenix to Patrick Motorsports to investigate the oil issue I had heading to the SoCal drive last weekend.

Attached Image

1st time I'd ever been there, they built the car originally and my gamble was that since they built it, they'd be able to spot any DAPO issues immediately and resolve them... That happened within 15 minutes of them looking at the car. Root cause of the oil puking event was that DAPO (brother of the original owner, who didn't "know" the car) had oil changed to Brad Penn, not an oil you should be using in a 3.6 motor that wants full synthetic.

Good news for me, easy fix, also got to inspect the other filters and everything was really clean and no special suprises like engine glitter (thank god!)

Wow do they have some amazing stuff there, I held back from taking a bunch of pictures to be respectful of the owner and the customer's but did grab a few Attached Image

Got the wiring harness out.

Hi,

My '72 1.7L will be going in for paint soon (I hope!) and I think that I should pull the wiring harness.

Is it much of a problem?

Any tips/tricks much appreciated.

Coincidentally, I'll be digging one of the 'P' cars out of storage and trailering it to AZ when we're finished with a bunch of CA projects ... looks like tentatively sometime in June (IMG:style_emoticons/default/idea.gif)

Pulled the carbs, intake manifolds and tins off the engine & started cleaning it up. Want to paint the tins before putting them on. Put in cooling vanes PO had removed - actually the flap over the cooler was in, but left to flap freely so that some air was flowing over the cooler, the air pressure was probably lifting it some so oil cooler was probably only getting a fraction of the air it should have. Have new T'stat ready to go in after cleaning engine.

Drove it to a field with a bunch of old beaters who drive way too fast. All have very sticky tires.

Spent way too much time removing the stuck and rusted screws holding on the headlight chrome ring. Tossing the headlights that came on the car.

Had to break out the DremelĀ® to cut the adjusters and the 3 per screws that held on the headlight ring. Someone used steel screws which rusted a bit.

Thank you to Rich @914werke who came through again by sending me some sheetmetal so I can fabricate throttle body cover for my V8 car. A few more hours of trimming and painting left...here it is mocked up. Also added expanded sheet metal to fender vents...paint later.

Since all the cool kids are doing it, and I'm cleaning up the engine bay anyway, it seemed like it was time to freshen up the charcoal canister a bit. I'll add the new charcoal tomorrow and reinstall. Thanks for the tips Ian!
