QUOTE(ClayPerrine @ Oct 15 2024, 10:27 AM) *

Sunday I was working on the six to reinstall the rear trunk torsion bars, and I found this:

It's bad enough that I am going to have to replace the suspension console. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif) And I am not a body man at all.

What really sucks is that fact that the engine compartment seals are original. They still have the staples in the corner. This shit has never been tampered with.

With two other 914s disassembled, this is not a good thing. We own three, and none of them are drive-able at this time.

Ouch! Assume that is due to stress rather than rust. Does that car have flares with big tires???? One side or both sides???

Sorry for your discovery, but happy you found it that way and not while rounding a corner hard and fast.

oh wow! Good not when ur driving sir.
Not sure if someone already produced a stiffening kit for that area? Saw several did weld additional metal to that, but home made piece. My trailing arm has a welded reinforcement boxed kit. I rather make the suspension ear stronger than the trailing arm. Trailing can easily be changed but suspension ear is harder to repair.

Damn that’s a bummer. Thank God you spotted it, you could be telling us a different story. Or not (IMG:style_emoticons/default/sad.gif)

Nope. This is a bone stock six. It has the original, numbers matching 2.0L six in it.

Just age and sitting in a barn in Iowa for years. It finally caught up with it.

That is @Betty . And she is a far better driver than me. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving-girl.gif) And probably the reason for the crack. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif)

@cassmcentee

Did you weld that yourself or go somewhere, is it hard to weld upside down, did you go to a muffler shop or something?
Thanks

Welded this myself, upside down is not a problem, make sure to wear good protective pants/gloves/jacket/cap as the slag will rain on you.

Installed a small aux fusebox for the 4 un-fused lines in the engine compartment.

I had been noodling this around in my head after seeing some good installs here. Didn't want to drill so I fabbed up an aluminum bracket that is attached via the battery hold down bolt.

The original 50-year-old wiring was on on its last strands so I knew something needed to be done. Happy with the overall execution but I think I'll re-do it this winter and shorten the 4 wires even more to get a smoother transition to the box.

Probably a new AGM battery in the future (with lugs in the correct orientation) and I have a new + cable ready to go in as well.

Still working on the dash. This is a tool to stamp a place for VDO gauges into the sheet metal. Notice the 3/8" angle that will angle the gauge towards the driver. At least that is the plan. Almost ready for testing

Things in there were pretty crispy. Rectifier shot, brushes worn out. Inner brush about 1/8 inch shorter….

Thanks to Eric, installed the new flex lines today on the '73 and then bled the system. They look great.
