Started looking for the source of the magic smoke that escaped from behind the dash on my most recent sanity drive... and found this:
![]() Looks to me like the plastic holding the Lo/Med/Hi leads has melted. Here's a different view: ![]() And a pic from underneath: ![]() You can see where the plastic board is melted just above the terminal... Which raises another question--according to the wiring diagram in the Haynes manual, the feed to the blower switch should be a red/white wire from fuse 8. As near as I can tell, the feed on mine looks like a skinny brown wire with a white trace. The fat brown wire on the top of the switch (picture 2) looks like it connects to another fat brown wire, but with a white trace (?!?). Here's the Haynes diagram I'm referring to: ![]() The switch is "30," the blower motor is "63," and the blower motor relay is "54." So the switch is toast (no pun intended), and I will disconnect it and tape off the wires for now. Fortunately I have a NOS replacement on hand. Unfortunately, it looks like fuel tank and blower motor have to come out before I can replace the switch. I also looks like I need to go to school on how the switch is supposed to be wired...and where the blower motor relay is located in the car. I may start a separate thread on this once I start actual replacement, but I'd appreciate any pictures, advice, BTDTs, or lessons learned. Thanks in advance! Steve A- |

Steve A- I see blower motor issues EVERY single week. The most common failure is "not working" and slapping the motor MAGICALLY fixes it. My customer say "Oh, you fixed it" to which I reply "Nope, I diagnosed it". The very next thing I do is check the pigtails to the blower motor itself, the resistor, and the switch. Any melted parts means the blower motor has been puling to many amps and it burned up the wiring harness. Normally I see the most damage on the ground side (which is usually where the resistor is located). I solder the new pigtails in (got to find high quality pigtails!) replace the blower motor and resistor and SOMETIMES (not real often) replace the blower switch. Your burned up wiring is a symptom, not the root... Look to increasing the ground side as well. I put 3 $400 HVAC head units in a Veloster my son owned. Pissed off at having to do the job multiple times I added multiple grounds the last time. End of BS! Ninja proverb: Hunt the root! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif) |

Hadn't posted in Quite a while. Finally took the Rocket out of the garage, and let the sun shine on it some
Can't believe I've had this thing almost 30 years now. Anyway, lately I've converted the car over to a Lithium Battery up front, and removed the old lead acid Battery. What a difference in weight and packaging. Definitely the way to go. Also converted the fuel delivery system to an in tank system. I got a Aeromotive Phantom unit, and modified the tank and lines to swap it over. Nice and quiet now. Ron Attached thumbnail(s) ![]() |

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/ninja.gif) (IMG:style_emoticons/default/agree.gif) Thanks for the reply. And yes, going after the root on this as I want to do it right the first time. I didn't think there could be a car worse than the old Volvo 240 for fixing blower motor problems, but it looks like the 914 could come close. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif) |

I installed my new ignition and FI harnesses on my early 74 1.8L. Special thanks to @JeffBowlsby for the amazing harnesses.

Was reading the newest issue of Porsche Panorama and saw a picture from the 1972 Parade concours at Lake Geneva, WI and realized my '71 914 was in the picture!! Couldn't take the car for a ride as it's out of state for a restoration so took its brother for a ride instead...
