eric im surprised you send your stuff out for plating. with the amount of plating you have done, i would have thought for sure YOU are doing your own plating.

I envy you guys who have the time and inclination to tear your cars totally apart and start over from scratch (IMG:style_emoticons/default/beerchug.gif)

im with you mark. i think most of those guys have 2 or 3 914's to drive. i have only one and there is no way i would tear it down without having a back up. its too damned fun to be without it.

This probably doesn't count....but I washed my windshield of "garage dust" and ... blah, blah blah ...
Are you gonna make it to the RT-66, Jim ?

... and Eric, I FELT I should comment on your back pad (IMG:style_emoticons/default/rolleyes.gif)

Looks nice. Question though, I started trying to fit some plush carpet to my firewall but couldn't figure out the cuts that are needed. Did you have to make cuts to get the felt to conform to all the contours?

P.S. the calipers made Dianne smile (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif) ... Thanks

Felt will bend and flex to a degree. I started witty the center hump then worked the corners of that extensively. Then straight across and worked the wrinkles out from the hump. Again, it will stretch and bend.

Glad the calipers made it. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smilie_pokal.gif)

I told the man "Don Kravig" to have at it. To tear down the 3.6 top end and replace exhaust valve guides. ALSO while in there he will do a three angle valve job and mill the heads to get 1 more point of compression. excited.

same exact thing happened to me in a bus one time. spindle and everything was toast. i had to cut the drum off with a torch just to salvage the wheel cylinders. the spindle nut was too tight......

Since my engine compartment is empty, I went after rust with POR15, and thinking, "Oh, there isn't much rust, so I won't need the nitril gloves for such a small job."

Yeah, well, now HALF of the engine compartment is painted with POR15, and about 1/4 of my hands are covered with it as well.

After my wife got through laughing at me, we tried all sorts of stuff, but it looks like I'm going to be splotchy for a while. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Cheers, Peter

Yesterday, I did arguably one on the most reviled jobs on a 914 , a master cylinder replacement on my '74 1.8L.

Had my original 17mm MC leaking into the pedal area. Had to be fixed. Sourced a 19mm and spent a few hrs prepping and replacing. I was able to "pull" the reservoir lines down a bit to give me extra room and gently force the lines into the MC rubber bushings. As described on many threads, the line end should "snap" into place once it is inserted far enough and makes contact with the washers in the master cylinder.

Also replaced the right rear hard brake-line from the pressure valve to the flex line. My old one was damaged, so I found a breakers in Oakland that was parting out a '76. Luckily, it was a perfect match.

Tried to bench-bleed the MC, but it was more mess than not. Next up, bleed baby bleed.

Pulled the fuel tank today to see how everything under was. Nice and clean. Reinstalled the tank and now I am about to clean up the drivers side shock mount. Another mice pee fix (IMG:style_emoticons/default/dry.gif)

Mmmm why yes I am. I go Thursday to check out the new valve guide work, the head milling and 3 angle valve seat work. I will update my build thread soon. Thanks for the interest. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) excited. I may have a driver yet this year.
