Terri dug this out of the driver's door pocket and handed it to me with my coffee:

Attached Image

I knew it was in late May but had forgotten the exact date. Wow. I remember thinking if I had the car 5 years I'd have gotten my $ worth.

Daily driver from 1972 until AUG 1989. AFA in Colorado Springs, Tyndall AFB FL, Luke AFB AZ, with ex-wife while I was "remote" in AK (should have garaged it), Seattle WA, Tinker AFB OK, Langley AFB VA, NAS Norfolk VA/CVN-68/CVN-70, Seattle WA, Langley AFB VA, Peterson AFB CO, and back to Langley. Doesn't count it being driven home to MN on leave 5 or six times during all that.

I thought about selling it back around 1990--Terri talked me out of it (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wub.gif) said the kids wouldn't be little forever, and we would wish we'd kept the car. She was right (as usual).

Planning a short drive for tonight to celebrate the anniversary . . . (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

This '70 -6 conversion project is getting close. I'm hoping it will run this summer.

A long time ago, I saw where some had cut a hatch in the firewall for access to the pulley/fan/alternator/dizzy and whathaveyou. That seemed like a good idea to me.

Attached Image

Mine is made of 16 gauge steel from Lowe's with 8, count'em, 8, 10mm nuts welded on the engine side.

Attached Image

I glued some old inner tube rubber on the plate, pressed up against the bulkhead, bolts thru from the inside. found an extra hold down on my parts shelf for a handle.

Now I'll look thru the old posts to see how I should have done it! Then on to the next chore.

QUOTE(euro911 @ May 20 2014, 05:12 AM) *
I stuck a paperclip in the center hole of the left rear ATS wheel on the 'BB' and had my wife follow me with a video camera aimed at it, so I can show the judge that the parking enforcement officer (who issued me a ticket for the car 'supposedly' being parked on the street in excess of 72 hours) is full of shit.

The paperclip just rolls around in the spinning wheel - for miles and miles ... (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I did this yesterday, because today, they tore out the curbs and started trenching for new curbs and gutters. Since my court date is this Thursday, wanted to show the paperclip issue under the same exact conditions in front of my house as the day the ticket was issued (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)
What...a...crock...of...crap...
Let us know what the judge says (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Well, I presented the City Prosecutor with my evidence on May 22, and she didn't react in a positive manner. She told me she would need to speak with the parking officer to get more detail on his methods of determining valid infractions and would mail me her findings in about 10 days.

Today, I received this in the mail:

Attached Image

(IMG:style_emoticons/default/first.gif)

Since this document will remain in their records, notice how they implied that 'an error on the citation' was the reason they refunded my $. Actually, I don't care, it doesn't go on my driving record ... as long as I was refunded (IMG:style_emoticons/default/shades.gif)

On other news, they prepped for my new approach yesterday

Attached Image

and poured today (IMG:style_emoticons/default/aktion035.gif)

Attached Image

Paying the city $121. for a permit to widen the approach was well worth the money. I helped one of my neighbors get a permit for a 12' approach too (IMG:style_emoticons/default/smile.gif)

Installed my short shifter today. You guys were right. The springs are a bitch.
Hopefully won't have to make any adjustments. It seems to be hitting all the gears correctly but I'll take a test drive tomorrow to find out for sure.
Coupled with my Dr Evil sorted transmission (blocked 1st, flipped and an H gear) and all new bushings, should be the last task for getting my transmission fully sorted.

Next task-
Front sway bar install.

Changed out the pedal pads 'cause never knew how old they're even though they look to be OK. But what a big difference! Fresh ones are actually little sticky. Got better feel now!

I cleaned out all of the acorns in the center tunnel, and treated all of the rust.

I am pretty sure a large family of chip munks took over my car when the PO had it.

Installed a Derale oil cooler today. It took about an hour and a half to do. Oil filter sandwich (the filter is still above the engine mount) with a built-in 180 degree bypass, 180 degree fan switch and all fittings and hose for $215 from Amazon.

I took it out for a hard ride and was somewhat disappointed that my temps only dropped about 25 degrees where others had experienced 40 degrees or more. Then I noticed that there was no fan noise. I had immediately blown the 5 amp fuse that I installed. Upped it to 15 amps and the fan ran perfectly and my temps dropped.

By the way my 2056 engine build with Megasquirt for FI and ignition is running great except for my idle which is currently faster than I would like. The power and smoothness are fantastic! This coupled to a Dr. Evil clinic rebuilt transmission has transformed my 914.

Found my throttle sticking issue. The heat shield was not enough protection from the heat exchanger. once it was melted away the nylon inside the cable would melt and bonded in side the housing. Then I went for a drive (IMG:style_emoticons/default/driving.gif)

I got a driver's seat back in my car! The DAPO cut out the factory seat mounts and bolted in a pair of seats from a mid-80s Toyota. Thanks to Tangerine Racing and their bolt in seat mounts, I can actually sit in my car!

Got the carbs in tune, pulled the jets and cleaned them off, set the timing on the Mallory, fired it up and went on a drive. First time in four years! Good to be back.

Mounted rear suspension shocks and tires. went to put the front wheels on and realized the steering column wasn't connected to the steering rack. I need to know if dropping the rack is the only way to reattach the steering column or if it can be done in the cabin. Not really looking forward to dropping the rack

It depends on where it is disconnected. If the coupler is unbolted, you need to pull the tank. If it is just the u-joint, that can be done from under the dash. You don't need to drop the rack for either of them.
