QUOTE(76-914 @ Feb 3 2015, 10:28 AM) *
This borders on embarrassment and I should just say I changed tires and be done with it, but no. On the return trip home after the last GnR I felt I had thrown a tire weight. More recently, Kugel began to ride like a Stage Coach and felt as if it were moving up n down! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/confused24.gif) I began to envision my engine cradle flexing and to imagine the best course to reinforce the cradle. After all, I had "tracked" the tires rotation and all seemed to be within 1/8" of being true and had been balanced "to be sure".
I found a post here that stated where the date code is located. Hmmm, it appears that mine were made 5th week of 1998. Shouldn't tires last longer than that? (IMG:style_emoticons/default/wacko.gif) I switched tires/wheels between Whitey and Kugel and OMG what a fuching difference! I don't believe that these 165/80/15's will like the six very much but I'm enjoying the smooooooooth hi way cruise and the lower rpm's (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) not to mention the handling and how nice Fuchs look on a black car!
In retrospect, I believe some of those "rides" that I gave at GnR were the nails in the old tires coffin. Now, I'm glad that I never got over 105mph. I knew they were old but not that old. (IMG:style_emoticons/default/headbang.gif)
If your wondering where the date code is.........if made since 2000, the date code is last 4 digits of an 8 to 12 letter stamp following the DOT stamp. 079822120409 = 4th week of 2009. If made in the 90's the last "3 digits" are the date code and will have a small triangle stamped in the start of the series. 88347498 = 4th week of 1998. Or something like that. QUOTE(Beeliner @ Feb 3 2015, 04:22 PM) *

Those tires were long gone... Any tire over five years is suspect. Hagerty had a piece on what was damaging to stored cars.... Mice eating wires and old tires being dangerous in spite of their good looks are two major issues.

Adding how to check the age of a tire is very helpful. Your posting could save a life....

Indeed. The tires on my car looked nearly perfect, but when I checked the date code, they were from 1996.

Received a nice set this morning from Bill1963. Now my 75 will have a 911 Fuchs soon.

And was able to do some metal cutting to cover a cut out below my 71 battery tray and ready to install new rear suspension console.

Ordered from Sierra Madre a rear bumper rubber for my '71 - almost $100 off regular price. Sweet deal.

I used brake cleaner too, the crap just poured out of them. It is amazing how light of a touch the stock handles/mechanisms have when cleaned and properly lubricated. Night and day.

Now do the latches and pulls on the front hood and engine cover. Big difference as well.

Drove her for the first time in forever, she was tucked away for the winter but the Jetta decided to get the hickups so the 914 is back in service.

Let us know if the hub works or if you have to modify for fit. Very interested!

For today I, cleaned up a 914-4 brake rotor and bolted (one hole) to the Boxster hub. It almost self centers. I then tightened up the wheel lug. Used a transfer punch to mark the 5 bolt pattern. Will drill them after getting a bit for a stud mount ? I want to do a mock up so I'm using what I have. Anybody try using allen bolts for wheel studs ? In dirt racing it is a cheep way to go . With some luck the stub's will be here in a day or two ?

The trailing arm is in the bead-blaster for cleaning. Then some welding. Any body on the board sell the metal kits for the chassis and trailing arm's ?

Mad dog in the Members Venders forum makes all the chassis stiffening kits. His products are nicely made and reasonably priced!

Bought this LED to use as a shop lamp. Tired of the reel cord cfl and regular incandescant filiments breaking. Lowes sells one for 20$ which is 700lumens.
This one lights the entire garage up 30$ (IMG:style_emoticons/default/blink.gif)

Took, delivery of two leather wheels this week and bought a GT roof marker lamp (IMG:style_emoticons/default/biggrin.gif) one of the wheels the seller described as a 73RS wheel, the guy used to work at Autofarm (renound early 911 and RS specialist in the UK). Part number and date codes would seem to check out?? and it was sensible money even if it turns out not to be an RS wheel
